Students save time and $$$ by talcing advantage of concurrent enrollment By Stacy Mecham About 300 high school students, living in th Uintah Basin, art discovering that there are many benefits through the Utah State University Uintah Basin branch campus concurrent enrollment program. Concurrent enrollment at USU Uintah Basin branch campus is offered to high schools via telecommunications, fiber optics and live instruction at Union, Altamont, Duchesne, Tabiona. and Uinta high schools. School districts, in cooperation with the USU Uintah Basin branch campus, provide a concurrent enrollment program which allows students d classes to take during high school time without paying fees. The state distributes the money approximately $33 per student credit hour then the district (depending on the situation) reimof burses USU by about that amount per credit hour to cover expenses. This saves concurrent enrollment students and their parents a bundle, because they only pay textbook fees credit hours. High school seniors and juniors are usually the only students offered classes, though in cases where counselors and parents see children excel some sophomores and freshmen are accepted. Are the college preparations too much to expect of high school students? "Not V you manage your time," says Elizabeth Howard, a concurrent enrollment senior. For the most part USU professor Sharon MitcheR says, high school students "learn what is needed and perform well." Expectations and requirements are the same for students taking concurrent enrollment and regular college students. Concurrent enrolment students receive a pass or fail transcripts and grade on one credit toward graduation for every three hours of credit earned at USUI Letter grades are given for classes, though, on college trancsripts.
