Show rre 8 UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. Frtrmiv 23. 1999 Tobacco Settlement Youth, PTA, Cancer Society plead with Legislature A roup of 200 am- anti-tobac- bassadors representing student groups, the Utah PTA, and volunteer tobacco control advocates gathered in the State Capital rotunda today. Their purpose wss to urge the Utah Legislature to dedicate at least a portion of the state's $836 million tobacco settlement to fund youth tobacco prevention and control programs. "As teenagers and students, we see first-han- d every day how youth smoking is growing in Utah, said Ashley ThurkiU, who directs public relations fin- the Governor's Youth Council. We are constantly exposed to peer pressure, glamorous tobacco - next step by dedicating part of this money for the health of our children." Other youth attending from as far away as Logan and Utah County expressed feelinge that not enough is being done in schools and in the media to encourage young people to avoid tobacco. That message was sent loud and clear to the Utah Legislature and other elected ads and other influences to smoks. Many young people don't receive any encouragement to avoid tobacco. stuChris Stock is an dent at Kaysville's Mountain High School who agrees. He quit smoking more than a year ago but not without great difficulty. He and many others are asking what lawmakers can do to help. Paula Plante, director ofthe Utah PTA, says her organisation has focused on the youth tobacco problem for more than 15 years, first by getting rid of cigarette vending machines and fighting for indoor clean air, then by putting tobacco behind the counter and supporting the cigarette excise tax. The PTA tradition is continuing this year by encouraging the Legislature to overcome a reluctance to commit some of the states $836 million tobacco settlement to youth tobacco prevention and education. The fight against the tobacco industry to limit youth access to its deadly products and reduce the devastating effects of smoking is an ongoing effort that the PTA can never give up on. she said. Our children are much too important. Its time the Legislature takes the ld officials today. Soma leading lawmakers and Governor Leavitt have indicated reservations about making decisions on where to spend the tobacco settlement money this year because of the possibility the federal government could withhold up to 75 percent of the funds under Medicaid law. Beverly May represents the American Cancer Society (ACS)and was helpful in dispelling that myth. This is accomplished beet by simply removing a few of the older canes at the base when the plant starts to get out of control. Shrubs that are only year or two old probably do not need pruning because their canes are young and normally have not outgrown their eulturist M R Qualified For Rental If Qualified later in the year. m 1 Bedroom Starting At $1 75month 2 Bedroom 0.
