Generally volunteers work with one case at a time. Every child who has been abused, neglected, or is dependent on the State for care has a guardian ad litem, with whom the volunteer works. The volunteer is given access to the child's complete file, so he or she is prepared before meeting the child. The CASA volunteer conducts an independent study of the situation, visiting the child once a week for several hours at a time. They see the home environment, and spend time with the children. Teachers and counselors are talked to, to help (the volunteer! form an opinion of what is in the best interest of this child. Finally, the advocate goes into court and makes a recommendation to the judge. The CASA program in Utah be one-on-o- gan in 1994.
