Exceptions are spring sports, boys soccer, baseball (not including fall baseball) and softball where dead-tim- e the postseason four-weewill begin in August on the starting date for football and volleyball. The other two periods can come any time during the school year. The coaches associations for each sport are deciding when theyll go into effect. 1-- A four-wee- k Many athletes have become spe- cialized such as basketball players, who play the sport the entire year while ignoring fall and springsports. "It is something that had to be done. Athletes dont get a chance to be a kid any more, said Union High School athletic director and a former coach, Brent Fieldsted. "Everyone will be under the same rule and pressure will be taken off them to play fulltime. They will be able to take time off their favorite sport In more rural areas such as Roosevelt, Duchesne, Tabiona, Altamont, athletes dont have access to programs that are available in Wasatch Front areas. "The rule will keep those Big City schools from getting an unfair advantage over smaller schools, added Fieldsted.-Individual sports such as golf, tennis, cross country, wrestling and track can observe three four-wee-k periods anytime during the school year, which allows athletes to compete in regional and national events that are often held right after the season ends. The required postseason deadtime for teams sports will begin following the football, girls soccer and volleyball seasons this fall.
