Show Kihaf's Well, around here it might mean a lot or very little. There were a few fellers around here in years gone by who had a real sense ofhumor. Either that, or they were flat out some of the biggest liars the west has ever seen. The Strawberry Valley is on the west side of the Uintah Basin. Would all those who have ever picked a strawberry in Strawberry please raise your hand? I thought so. Now Red Creek, on the east side of Strawberry is a fair enough name. As a matter of fact, I haven't been around a Red Creek, Dry Gulch, Sand Wash or Clay Basin with a name that was the least bit misleading. Those names are pretty much self explanatory and totally honest But just east of Red Creek is Fruitland. While it is hard to argue that Fruitland is a plumb pretty place to see, dont plan on driving to Fruitland to buy cherries or peaches or apples. Ill grant you that you might find a strawberry in a patch in Fruitland, but you wont find mdch other fruit around here unless its in a box at the Fruitland Store. Natwe2 Ui A Between Fruitland and Duchesne lies a bunch of cedar trees. So many that somebody once told me that it was the largest cedar forest in the world. Theres a fair part of the world that I havent seen yet, so I dont know ifthats true, but I do know I would hate to have to count all of them. Toward the eastern edge of this copious conflagration of conifers lies Starvation Reservoir. This reservoir is on the Strawberry River, but there arent any strawberries here either. About the only fruits youll see around here are juniper berries. Maybe thats why they call it Starvation. Or,, maybe years ago some poor soul was traveling through this country afoot and after he didnt find any strawberries in Strawberry or fruit in Fruitland, he was starving for some fresh fruit and couldnt find any in the canyon so he named it Starvation. Just east of Starvation is the town of Duchesne which isnt but pronounced On die is pronounced other side of Duchesne, you'll come to Bridgeland. . Why do they call it Do-sha- Frontier Motel Bridgeland"? After all, if they called some place mountainlanrT, you would expect to see a bunch of mountains. Dairyland" would denote more than a few dairies. How many bridges do you think are in Bridgeland"? One. The highway (40) follows the Duchesne River valley east to Myton, which is good, cause the bench to the south of the road is called the south Myton bench and after you pass through the town, which has one bridge, over the Duchesne River, and probably would have been called Bridgeland if it had a few strawberries, you come to the north Myton bench. On the south side of the south Myton bench lies Pleasant Valley. It is mostly farm ground and it is a pleasant place to be, but that's not why they call it Pleasant Valley. It seems that when the valley was being settled and turned into farm ground, it was a pretty tough place to be. Hence die menfolk had left their women folk in other, more pleasant places. The absence of women in the valley lead some of the men to conclude it was a & Anthro Mountain is a land of contrastsall of them easy on the eye. Located south of US 40 between Duchesne and Rooosevelt, the south facing slopes are covered with cedars. The north facing slopes are covered with quakies andpines. It'S like being in two places at the same time. pretty pleasant place to be. It became known thereafter as Pleasant Wiley. No, I didn't make that up. Roosevelt was named for Teddy Roosevelt, who opened die .reservation up to settlement. When it was time to name the Grill tg town, it seems many of the menfolk wanted to name it Dry Gulch. The wife of the founder of the town stated unequivocally that she was not going to live in a town with a sorry name like Dry Gulch, so she came up with CONTINUED ON PAGE 17 m9 Stop Fly Fishing Pro Shop - Custom Tying & Typing Supplies Fly lying & Fly Fishing Classes Every Thursday 7:30 p.m. -- 9:00 p.m. Two Great Places To Fly Casting Clam Sign Up Now!
