Show Pape 14 -- March 3.1998 sClintqh Basin Standard SpOTtS End Season at 22-- 2 Cougars finish second due to title loss in overtime 3-- A By Aldon Rachele It appeared Union High School was on its way to its first girls state basketball championship since 1986 due to an lead going into the fourth quarter, but some tough luck calls that went against the Lady Cougars plus a last second shot at the buzzer that hit the rim and wouldn't go in allowed Snow 1 overtime Canyon to take a triumph for first place at Ogden, Saturday. The Cougars had to settle for its second runnerup trophy in the past four years. Union, also, took second in 1995. The Cougars finished the 1997-9- 8 season at best record in a long time. Union won 22 games in a row before its loss to Snow Canyon. The Cougars only other loss was to Kearns during the season opener. Union played most of the overtime period minus three starters. Sheila Hutchison and Bev Richens, two of Unions top scorers, fouled out in the fourth quarter and April Mecham, another starter, left during the overtime period. The Cougars led 42-3-1 after three quarters due to a three-poiplay plus a field goal by Sarah Colton, three-pointby Richens and a free throw by Nicole Larsen. All of a sudden Unions lead was reduced to three on a three-pointby Smith, but Colton put the Cougars up by six points on three-poiplay. A bucket by Larsen had Union ahead 52-4and then hoop tragedy struck when Hutchison fouled out; Union went ice cold and Snow Canyon almost melted the basket points in a row to take their first lead of the game at 53-5Colton delivered once again with a layup to return the lead to Union at 54-5However, the Lady Warriors stormed back to regain an adUnion refused to vantage at quit. Tami Nielsen tied up the game at 56-5-6 on a field goal. Alicia Uresk zapped in two free throws with 45 seconds left to give Union a 58-5- 6 lead. Unfortunately for the Cougars the lead was shortlived. Snow Canyon scored on a layup to tie up the game at The final 14 seconds were rough tough on the Cats. It appeared Union had forced a jump ball with 14 seconds left with Union gaining the precious circular item because the possession arrow was pointing to their bench. However, the officials ruled that Snow Canyon had called timeout before they were tied up and gave the ball to the Lady Warriors. Earlier a Cougar ball player was knocked to the floor, but no foul was called. Union could have had an opportunity to win the game at the foul line, but it was never granted. Snow Canyon didn't take advantage of their big break. They threw the ball away with Union taking over with five seconds left. However, Union was unable to score when a last second shot wasnt able to find its mark. Union was underwomaned in the overtime due to losing three starters. The Cougars were outscored by Snow Canyon, 13 to 3 . Uresk, Colton scored to twice bring Union back within one, but Snow College scored nine in a row to freeze out the Cougars title hopes. Colton led Union with 16 points and Hutchinson, Uresk, who also had ten boards, added 11. Larsen, Richens and Nielsen tossed in seven and Mecham scored two. and Hutchison hit 3 Richens two. Tabiona took a 15-- 9 first quarter lead over Green River, which owns the only 1997-9- 8 defeat of the Tigers back in December. The Tigers led 29-2-4 at the half and increased their lead to ten at 46-3-6 with 17 counters in the third quarter. Green River pumped in 18 and Tabiona tossed in 17 to win by nine. Jeremy Stringham led Tabiona with 21 and Levi Ginea added 17. Rusty Harris scored 13. Jed Lefler added five and Brett Giles, Sam Rhoades three. C. Lefler tossed in one. Tabiona continued their bucket attack with 23 in both the third and fourth quarters. Manila was held to 23 counters. The Tigers led 59-3- 4 after three quarters and won by 36 points.
