Sandy Schurz, an Early-- Childhood Team member for Rookies ' Ready To Learn says that the works in partnership with parents to cover specific areas of development. Schurz and team member Mary Robbins travel to the homes of families who have signed up with the program to present children with a canvas bag filled with supplies and materials. A packet is provided for the parents which includes several activity ideas that promote development in areas uch as number recognition, shapes and colors, vocabulary and motor skills. The team member directs a short activity with the child, however. Schurz says the idea behind the program is to facilitate parents as the principle teacher. Rookies Ready To Learn is individualized to meet the childs interests and needs. We share ideas with the parents, and they give us good ideas too, we don't test the kids and we dont judge the parents, Schurz said. Three year old Cameron Wilkerson just learned how to use scissors and cut paper. Hes left handed. I didn't know how to teach him to use scissors, Camerons mother, Julie said. Now Cameron knows to hold his thumb up, and fingers down when he cuts. A skill he needs to know when he goes to Kindergarten. to school, Julie explained. Rookies Ready To Learn is a free service which sets the stage for learning at a child's formative years. Hie program's objective is to enhance a childs readiness in literacy, numeration, motor, and social skills as a preschooler today and be better prepared for school in the future. Team members will come back once a month, or as often as they are invited to present youngsters with a new packet of activities and supplies, often including books. Currently, Rookies Ready To Learn is available in Myton and Duchesne, Schurz said, explaining that in the near future it will be open to every school attendance area in the district Rookies Ready To Learn is administered through Duchesne County School District Title 1 Program.
