Show UINTAH BASIN STANDARD. November 18. 1997- - Paw IS Hoop Tryouts Basketball is serious stuff as Cats prepare for season By Aldon Raehele Jeff Hanke is a coach on the football team during the fall, but when winter arrives it is Time for his No. 1 sport-Basket- and bslI, Hanke wasn't about to hand out hankies to any team hopefuls, who were ready to shed tears due to working hud to get in shape as it was all Hoop Business during tryouts last week. Some hoop athletes were struggling with running up and down the floor, and Hanke said, You finish when you finish not when someone finishes ahead of you. You are cheating yourself Other coaches said, Hustle, hustle-go- Hustle lets go!! Hanke met with all the basketball team hopefuls and told them without a doubt You Dont Sluff Classes and then said, Ifyou don't like it the door is there right now. Basketball is important, but getting good grades and not skipping classes is higher on Coach Hankes -go-go! agenda. Union vanity basketball team hopefuls take part in hoop combat as they BASKETBALL BATTLE-Sev- enl attempt to get the basketball under control. Union will host Altamont, December 5 in the season opener for both teams. j i by Aldon Raehele I was watching tome youngsters wrestle a few weeks ago and I thought back to the days when I first started the mat sport while at Roosevelt Junior High School. 1966-6- 7 was the first season of the sport at RJH in the good old and Marlins winning the World Series. The wrestling coadi was the shop teacher, Scott Hirschi, and after he saw whxt he had for matmen I think he wanted to go home and get a file or sander to smooth off the rough edges of his tusslers. The gymnasium was the domain of RJH basketball coach Burr Eldredge and hoopsters, Michael days-pre-V- bad results that killed off the Ute winning hopes or run scoring abilityUintah gained a win over Union on a suicide squeeze, and I thought what a Cool Move until two of the plays were attempted in one inning in a future game with the net runs and three outs. One time the bases were loaded and the CR, pre-Flori- Harrison, Brad. Hancock, Jeff Alexander:' Steve Yack- - Brad v Gollaher,' etc.!' and the wrestlers,' Jon Bingham, A1 Rachels, Arvin Winterton, Don Larson, etc., had to work out in the lunch room. Little bitsy mats were set up in the lunch room after the tables and chairs were moved. Sometimes the action would get a bit wild and unfortunately a matman or two would get tossed into a table worse than tomatoes, purple cabbage, cucumbers and lettuce in a salad. Sometimes the wrestlers wished they had a piece of beef steak to put on abumpor bruise that they gained when they made a mistake on the mat where they ended up doing a squeeze back fired with the runner out at home and the bunter tagged out at first base. I wanted to Kill the Suicide Squeeze play that year because it was attempted one or more times per game, but mysterious the next year the exciting play dropped dead because of all of the bad publicity. Sometimes I wondered that year if the coach had wrestled in a lunch room and hit his head on a table, which caused his brain to be locked on the same play the suicide and over and over squeeze-ov- er again. The battling in the lunch room was worth it as the tusslers learned to be tough, and then they got to put the mat holds on those basketball players who kept them out of the precious gym during P.E. classes. While on the subject of basketball players, one ofthe best hoopsters I ever saw play the sport was Uoyd Merkley, who I believe lived in Maeser. Uoyd loved to jet to the basket fin- driving layups, which were pretty exciting to watch, but he never made Uintahs varsity team. I guess the coach wanted him to give the ball to the Big Guys. Merkley played on his local church teams and he usually put on a great show as he gunned tiie hoop from long distance so often that I swore that he was going to get a bill from U.S. West or ATT or one of those MCI or Sprint guys.
