Show I Prr I I - Bebniarv 4, 1997 Education Uintah Basin Standard Altamont High announces 1996 Sterling Scholar candidates Altamont High School is proud to announce its 1997 Sterlirtg Scholar candidates in the areas or dance, math, science, family and consumer health sciences, English literature, speech and drama, social science, visual aits, technology, marketing education, and music and aenerd education. Heather Henry, Dance Sterling Scholar candidate, is the daughter of Larry and Judy Henry. Heathers love for dance began at age 3 when she began taking tap and ballet chases. Since that time she .has explored many different areas of dance. Heather has been captain of Altamonts Drill Team for the past two years, and was chosen as Miss Uintah Basin 1996. At the present time Heather is teaching ballet classes and plans to major in dance education at BYU in the fall. Math Raquel Christensen, Steriing Scholar candidate, is the of Ron and Karen' daughter Christensen. Raquel has been Math Club president, drill mistress, 1996 Homecoming Queen, as well as being named the outstanding math and business student 1996. She is a recipient of the United States National Mathematic award. Trinity Lee Bird, Science Sterling Scholar projects, been a cheerleader for three years, and has been a member of the National Honor Society for four years. Rhonda has received several awards at the Literature Fine Arts Fair for her writing. Sami Thayne, Speech and Drama Sterling Scholar candidate, is the daughter of Johny and son of Kerry and Mary Bird. Trinity is a two year member of Mathematic Society and attended Boys State in 1996. He is an Eagle Scout and a high honor student. Mindy Haslem, Family, Consumer, and Health Sciences Sterling Scholar candidate, is the daughter of Joe and Doris Haslem. Mindys accomplishments include serving as student body vice-FHA president, and Cesident, She is a Debbie . vice-preside- ' Mindy Haslem and Juanita Thacker. Effie has served as FBLA president, senior and FHA class She is a member of the National Honor Society, and Mathematic Society. Sam Ames, Viand Arts Sterling Scholar candidate, is the son of Rodger and Linda Ames. Sam's accomplishments include being an Eagle Scout, yearbook editor, FFA secretary, and making the honor roll. Melinda Thacker, Music Steriing Scholar candidate, is the daughter of Dean and Leslie Thacker. Melinda has served as student body secretary, junior class president, and FHA secretary. She is a member of the National Honor Society, was named history student for 1995-9- 6 and has been a cheerleader for two years. Whitney Farnsworth, English Literature instruction. Sami's Thayne. He has been a member of the National Honor Society in 1996, 1993, 1994, and was a Boys Stale candidate. Rhonda Mitchell, Social Science Sterling Scholar candidate, is the daughter of Randy and Sandy Bywater. Rhondas History Fair project were judged 1st place in 1991, 1992, and 1993 qualifying her for region competition every year. Whitney has been student body president, a member of Governors Honor Society, and was twice named outstanding English student. She had a story she authored published in book, and is a member of the National Honor Society. . Toni Ralphs, General Sterling Scholar candidate, is the daughter of Kenneth and Elaine Ralphs. Torn has served as FBLA has been on the drill team for two yean and is a High Honor student She also . eqjoys writing, Toni received a 1st place award fara poetry contest and has had a story published. Altamont Elementary 6th grade students and teachers last week invited their parents to join them at . their DARE Culmination ceremony. Attractively dressed in their shaip new Mack and red and caps, the students listened carefully as principal Rex Wilcox, teachers Joanne Burton and Bob Marshall, Duchesne County Sheriff Ralph Stansfield and deputies Joe Summarell and Jesse Brown commended them for successfully DARE completing the course. Sheriff Ralph Stansfield and Deputies Summarell and Brown have been the instructors for the program this year. . Outstanding poems relating to . Sam Ames Effie Thacker Sami Thayne Rhonda Mitchell DARE were read aloud by their Cole Winn, authors Sorensen, Celeste Candise Bruce, and Shelly Lindsay. Colton Burton read his essay, and Jace Jenkins and Isaac Bird gave comments on Taking a Stand. The DARE Program, which is locally by the Uintah Association or Governments and Duchesne County, leaches not only avoidance of drag use as a lifelong goal, but also awareness of the need for goal setting in pursuit of their ideals and dreams for their future. This year new emphasis on refraining from use of violence has been added to the DARE course. The words "Dare To Resist Drags and Violence" are included with the logo on students' caps and shirts. After teacher Joanne Burton led the group in singing the DARE Song, deputies Summarell and Brown presented the students with awards. They also gave the school some nice gifts with he red and Hack DARE logo: a basketball, a football, a playground ball, and a soccer ball. Closing remarks were then given by Sherri ff Stansfield. Duchesne 6th graders take the DARE pledge Duchesne Elementary is pleased to announce that 44 6th grade students have taken the pledge to remain Drag and Violence free! Thursday, Jan. 23 brought to completion the 17 week DARE coose taught by the local police force to all 6th grade students at Duchesne Elementary. Dining this course the students learned how to identify and deal with different types of pressures, they learned about choice and consequences, what constitutes violence, what harmful dungs drags to your body, things that you can do instead of using drags, and many other vitally important things for. young people to know today. The students looked forward each week to having the Duchesne County Sheriffs deputies came and and present each outstanding informative lesson.
