V " - 1997 proclaimed a year of Sesquicentennial celebrations The Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial was officially kicked off in January as Governor Michael O. Leavitt signal a proclamation recognizing 1997 as a statewide year-lon- g, pioneer celebration. The Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial Celebration will commemorate the anniversary of the arrival or the 150-ye- ar pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley, but will also honor aU of Utah's many pioneers throughout its history. A large group of people gathered at a ceremony held in the state capitol rotunda to hear Governor Michael O. Leavitt, Utah State Historical Society Director Max J. Evans, Elder Joe J. Christensen of the LDS Churchs Quorum of the Seventy, and Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Carrandini share their admiration and appreciation of Utahs pioneers and their accomplishments. Governor Leavitt described a recent climb to Ensign Peak which gave him "a spark of curiosity, which was a touch of what the pioneers must have fell" as they were about to view the Salt Lake Valiev for the first time in 1847. The Governor spoke of how the climb made him think of three traits exhibited by the original settlers that characterize "the spirit of pioneering." Leavitt said that he realized that as the pioneers neared the Salt Lake Valley they must have been curious atxxX the landscape, showed courage because they knew nothing of the growing season, and they cared about the future. He concluded by admonishing the audience to never stop caring about Utahs future. 12 Pack t $ January 1 Guiding the audience his speech by punting out murals in the rotunda that depict Utahs pioneer history, Max J. Evans defined a pioneer as anyone who takes risks, has courage, strong win, faith, fortitude and determination. This celebration is for everyone, not just the descendants of the first pioneers," hesaid. - "People are coming to Utah from other lands and other stales, some needing to leant new languages and new customs," said Evans. "Their straggles may be different, but they are no less significant" The Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial kid: off event was sponsored by the Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial Celebration Coordinating Council which was created by the legislature to coordinate and encourage a grassroots effort to commemorate all pioneering individuals and their contributions throughout the state. Performances by the Shoshoni Nation Singers, The International Childrens Choir, and The Beehive Band were also a part of the special ceremony.
