A state agency under the direction of the State Treasurer to collect, safeguard, and return lost or forgotten property to its rightful owner or heirs. WHAT IS UNCLAIMED PROPERTY? Money and other, personal assets that are presumed to be lost Questions and Answers Q. How does property become unclaimed? A. Property becomes Unclaimed when the owner does not respond, to attempts by the holder of the asset to locate them. Q. Why does Utah have such a law? A. To protect unclaimed property and return it to its true owners or heirs. Q. What attempts are made to find the rightful owners? or abandoned when an owner cannot be located. It indudes: uncashed payroll checks, commissions, or benefit checks; insurance checks; savings, checking accounts, certificates of deposit; state tax refunds; property tax overpayments; stocks and dividends; money orders or travelers checks; safe deposit boxes; gift certificates; credit balances and refunds; and many other categories not listed. A. Under the law, Holders (Banks, Insurance Companies, Businesses, etc.) must make a determined effort to locate the true owner. If they are unsuccessful, they are to report the names and last known address of the owners to the State Treasurer. The Treasurer then publishes these names in newspapers throughout the state. Q. What does the state do with this money? A. This money is deposited in the Uniform School Fund. Owners can always claim their financial assets. There is no time limit on claiming your money. |
