Show Pace 12 - October 22. 1996 education Uintah Basin Standard Duchesne Elementary students enjoy environmental learning experience Bright October sunlight shone on a large group of orange-cla- d people who were camped for three days in the wilderness. Was it a hunting party? No, it was school in session for Duchesne Elementary students. Ninety-on- e Duchesne Elementary Slh and 6lh grade students participated in Outdoor Adventure Training at Stockmorc Ranger Station, Ashley National Sue Forest, on October Wight, Resource Conservation and Development director; and Bob Hoopcs of Duchesne Elementary coordinated with many experts to create outdoor learning experiences for the students. Students learned about bats, no trace camping, firefighting, first aid, plant identification, fly licing, soils, water, timber, aquatic insects, and survival skills, packing the They visited equipment original Stockmorc Ranger Station and hal a local history presentation. Students learned about the Stillwater diversion project and took a walk inside the tunnel. Sheriff Ralph Stansflcld gave a nonDARE presentation on violence. The students also did crafls and wrote poetry. Duchesne High School FFA students led the group in a team building experience. The group was also entertained by a bagpipe player. PTA Duchesne Elementary provided orange vests for all participants and PTA president, Pam Helms helped throughout the trip. Medical personnel including Karric Hoopcs, Gail Foster, Dawna Marctt, and Gaylcnc Taylor were on hand to be of assistance. Tammy Ball and the Duchesne 1. READY FOR ADVENTURE Duchesne Elementary students spent three days camping as part of their classwork to learn about resource conservation. A classroom teacher said, "The trip was an excellent opportunity for the students to have fun and learn in an integrated curriculum setting. Experts who helped with the activiucs were: Joe Bistriski, District Ranger, Tom Bruton and Billy Pcatross, Water Conscrvcncy District; Troy Cooper, USU Extension agent; Randy Lewis, NRCS; Allen Huber, Duchesne er Ranger District; Dave Fogle, Heber Ranger District: Leslie Welch. The classroom teachers, the school principal, Mr. Fred Arko, and many parents accompanied their students and helped the activity run smoothly. -J Melanie Heaton has been accepted in to Who's Who Among American High School Students. Honor students wipe out ugly : words with paint Members of the National Honor Society from Union High School have devoted several days to painting over graffiti sprayed on walls of area businesses and at the old Roosevelt City park. The students, under the direction of advisor, Bart Willis, volunteered to help Roosevelt clean up the recent attack by vandals who spray painted walls at numerous businesses and tanks at oil location sites. Area merchants were contacted by the Duchesne County Area Chamber of Commerce and told that if they would buy the paint and equipment the high school students would supply the manpower. Armed with paintbrushes last Saturday, members of the national honor society members repainted the American Legion hall in Roosevelt, a shed at the old park, the Roosevelt Theater, and other businesses willing to purchase the paint to remove the graffiti. By Rusty Harrison The Drug Free Youth arc sponsoring a Red and Purple Ribbon Week October This is a nationwide activity for all schools. The red ribbon is a campaign to keep kids drug free, and - the purple one is to keen violence off the streets. There is also a Drug Free assembly Thursday during 1st hour.
