I still think about it. We were studying ancient Egypt so that we would be prepared for the Pharaoh Ramses H exhibit when it was at BYU. The PTA sponsored the field trip money, but I wanted the kids to appreciate and be able to take advantage ofthis exhibit They had to earn a certain number of paints with reports and prqjects before the field trip deadline. Everyone hustled. Almost everyone. David looked at encyclopedias, but somehow no work was ever ' done. He was reminded of the deadlines. Notes were sent home. David didnt seem worried. Two days before the field trip, he hadn't tinned anything in yet I reminded him that there was only one day left to earn the privilege of ' attending the exhibit I sounded like I was nagging my kids to dean their rooms. I should have suspected it would have ended in the same UEA President I didnt respect his decision at all. I though it was dumb he didnt work. I was angry at him. And I was angry at myself because I thought if I had been a better teacher, I would have been able to motivate him. Davids mother called me at home that night and told me that he was crying. She asked me to please change my mind and please let him go. Please. Hed make up the work after the field trip. I told her I couldnt That it wouldnt be fair to the other children. That it wouldnt be fair to David. So David didnt go. I felt mean. I felt angry because it wasnt fair that I felt mean. And I wonder if David even remembers this after so many years, and why I still feel like his consequence was harder on me than it was on him. Florence Richman For winter protection, hill roses with soil inches deep after killing frost. Prune weak wood and long canes that sway in the wind. Draw canes together at the base and tie loosely with twine. Cage plant with chicken wire and fill cage with leaves or other fight material. 8-- 10 Watch for our Open House Nov. 27 & 28! Special of the Week results. The next day when nothing was turned in, I told David that he had missed the deadline. That he couldnt go. That he would spend the next day in another class. I told him I was scary he had chosen not to earn the trip, but that I respected his decision to remain at school. I lied.
