Friday, November 9, after the Convention had been Judged the day before. Taking first plan in the grades 4- -6 competition, according to Laura Nielsen who chaired the event, was Jonathan Potter with his collapsible broom, while Kellee Moon came out on top for grades -8 with her cooking chips. Other winners in grades 4--6 were Jeff Redmunds automatic window washer, and Sherry Abbotts spatter guard for electric mixers. Wesley Wilkersan was second place winner in the grades -8 competition with his automatic plant waterer, while Laura Wight and her nurses game took third place honors. The Invention Convention is part of the Invent America" prqfect being pushed by several commercial organisations who sponsor and encourage youngsters in their creative effort, according to Nielsen. Several strategies fir strengthening innovative thinking are introduced by the teachers and include brain- storming for ideal, blockbusting to help the etudenta attack a problem from a different angle, finding alternative solutions forecasting results, collecting information, testing the product, and recording tin results. Students are even given tips on patenting their inventions. "Some of theae prqjecta should be patented and put on the market," remarked Prindpal Lowell Caldwell.
