November 21. 1990 - Page 3 The Forgotten Patient Christmas Program Chriatmaa ia a time to be joyful and tima to be with family and loved ones, but far many patienta without familiee at the Utah etate Hoapital and Wasatch Mental Health Chris tmaa can be the loneliest time of the year. Each year the Hospital has 260 patients, ranging from 6 to 90, who would have no Christmas without the help of the community. The Forgotten Patient Christmas Program has been designed to help provide Christmas for these patients. The success of the program depends totally on Volunteers can help in a variety of ways. Many families take an individual patient name and provide Christmas far the person. A list of gift suggestions is supplied with a little personal information about the patient they are sponsoring. Cash donations are also welcome far those who would prefer to have hospital volunteers do the shopping. Individual items, such as meirt under clothing, socks, grooming items (combe, cologne, deodorant, make up, etc.) are needed. Candy fa also a welcomed gift. The Forgotten Patient Program is quite often the only touch of the holiday spirit these patients experience. Please feel the spirit of giving this holiday season and sponsor a forgotten patient. As the year draws to an end library board members took a look last Wednesday at where we have been and where we are going. Each year to qualify for additional state funding the board submits a "development plan" far the craning year to the state library and must see the goals are completed in order' to receive grant money. Last years goals included organising a "Friends of the Library group, installing an art railing in the public meeting room, and completing the card catalogues. Patron usage cf the libraries increased overall by 12. The bookmobile also saw greater usage. Our librarian completed a state certification program. Also the book collection has increased. Goal's for 1991 indude to continue to build "Friends of the Library and expand the group beyond Roosevelt to the rest of the county, to conduct a community "needs assessment" survey, and to continue to increase book collection and patron usage. Also in 1991 bookmobiles in the state plan to be computerised. Bar codes with scanners will be used to check books in. and out, speeding up the process and making it more accurate, there will be a trial period in Tooele and by the end of the year all bookmobiles be computerised. The bookmobile will also receive a new chassis in 1991. Looking toward 1992 and 1993 the goal vrill be computerisation of the Duchesne CountyRoosevelt City library. The library plans to be computer compatible with the Bookmobile. A $1500 grant has been approved by the state library to help with this goal. librarians reported a significant increase in library usage for the month, due, they fait to the school reading program. The library will be cloeed Thanksgiving Day, November 22, and through the Thanksgiving weekend. Monday, November 26 the library will resume normal hours. The library will be dosed over the Christmas holidays Saturday, December 22 until Wednesday, 4-y- ear son of Randy and Jolynn Garcia will celebrate his first birthday on November 24. Alison Duke will be a new part time employee working at the library.
