Eaton It will be difficult to wear down the Tabiona Basketball Team this year because of a squad of experi- enced players, said Coach Lee Gines. It's tough to predict the season before it has even started, but it is probably correct to assume that d the Tigers will be a running machine. Ive got about eight to nine players I can use during the games, he said. Well be able to stayfresh and use the fast break. The Tigers will try out their tactics today, Nov. 22, in Vernal at 5:45 p.m. against the Utes. Tabiona is expected to move the ball with two returning senior starters, John Lefler and Lex Fabriiio, both captains and senior Robert Sweat At 63, John Lefler will be playing at the forward and center positions this year. Number 14 is described as a hard worker by his coach. Well expect a lot out of him on boards and in scoring, said Gines. With his leadership, well be successful. Fabrixio, at 60, is a good Jumper, said the coach. 'Ties tough in the post and real aggressive. Number 44 is another the Tigers will look to for leadership. Sweat, at 63, was not a starter last year, but gives his teammates all they could ask for in desire and drive. Hell really help us in certain situations, said Gines. Hes traveled from Current Creek to fast-pace- tBmxcprts Basin Standard season fast-pace- d play basketball with us for the last four years. Thats a big sacrifice. Number 30 will be seen in action as a forward and center. While the Tigers are young in age, they are high in experience with Juniors who bring vsrsity andor junior varsity experience from last year. The Tigers will then put in juniors: Marco Defa, 511, forwardguard; Jarrod Lefler, 612, forwardguard; Rusty Casper, 55, guard; Travis Price, 510, guard; Marc Van Tassell, 59, guard; Justin Giles, 59, guard; Ben Park, 5 10, forward; andDean Roberts, 61, forward. With such a team, the Tigers probably wont have a final starting roster throughout the season. Its a luxury for us. We haven't been able to do this in years, " said Gines. While a player is in he can give it all hes got. If he gets tired we can put someone else in and give him a rest The Tigers had a successful season last year before they lost the first two games in the Region playoffs. They also graduated the likes of Jeremy Lefler, Shane Lazenby and Ryan Jones. This year, the Tigers hope to use their strengths to make it past region to the state competition. The 1A Region Tournament will be held Feb. 27 through March 1 at the College of Eastern Utah. The State Tournament will be held at Utah State UniverMarch 7-- sity in Logan. Well be a good shooting team, said Gines. This is the Justin Giles. In the back row is Marco Defa, Marty Thomas, Jarrod Lefler, John Lefler, Robert Sweat, Lex Fabrizio, Ben Park, Dean Roberts and Coach Lee Gines. TABIONA BASKETBALL TEAM Tabiona Tigers include (front row, left to right) Joshua Lefler, Kim Giles, Cody Giles, Rusty Casper, Travis Price, Mate Van Tassell and 1989-90-T- best shooting team weve had. Then weve got kids who like each other. No one gets jealous of someone who goes in. With only a couple of weeks practice out of the way, the Tigers also have a few items to work on, said Gines. Well be trying to improve on the boards and work on rebounding, he said. Well be alright but were not proved in that area. Were working a lot on defense. The freshman and sophomore classes of Tabby will give the team support with Joshua Lefler at guard, Kim Giles at guard, Cody Giles at forward and Marty Tho- -' mas, a 60 center. Tabby will be preparing for he division play against Duchesne, Altamont and East Carbon. I think the division will be balanced this year, said Gines. Although Duchesne lost mqjor players from last years state championship, the Tigers know that the Eagles are still elevated from the 1988-8- 9 season. Sometimes its harder to overcome that type of momentum, Gines said. Duchesne is and has a lot of enthusiasm. Theyve got two of the toughest guards around. A lot is expected out of Altamont this year, said Gines, with height to the Longhorn advantage and the coaching of David Broth-ersoThe Longhorns several well-coach- , . n.
