Conditions are perfect, the fish are pigging out in preparation for the long winter months under the ice, the freezing temperatures have killed all the insects, and best of all, the streams that were so crowded during the summer months are virtually void of fishermen. There used to be a reason to stop trout fishing this time of year. The fishing season ended. Not any more. The West Fork of the Duchesne River is closed January 1 through June SO. All Strawberry Reservoir tributaries are closed January 1 to July 1. Red Creek, and Red Creek Reservoir Brown Duck Basin are closed . red-shirt- year team. Short leaders work better than long ones. Deep holes are where to find the trout, not the riffles that produce so well earlier in the year. Streams and rivers are low, and the water la tremely clear. The trout era there, and they are hungry, but they wont take wh at you are offering if they see you first Stay low and behind cover. If it takes longer so snesk up on a hole than it does to fish it, then you are doing it right. Tty your favorite flies, the ones you use in summer. If they dont work, dont give up. Tty If you have never streamers, buy some. A streamer is a large gaudy fly that is supposed to imitate a minnow. I cant see the comparison myself, but I guarantee, tha trout can. The Marabou Muddler is a good one, and brown seems to be the best color in late fall. Fish streamers deep, either near or right on bottom. If a natural drift doesnt attract a strike, try pumping the rod tip six inches or so for every yard the fly swings across currant You some-differe-nt. are imitating a minnow now, not a dead insect Minnows dodge and dart and thats what your fly must do. Its not unusual for a trout to swat a minnow, in an and than taka attempt to atun it If you continue to feel strikes, but come up empty handed, hesitate several seconds before setting the hook. Streamers come in all sizes, and you never know what is going to work. A three inch fly looks like it would scare a trout to death. Not so. I've caught pound and a half trout on four inch streamers tied on a size 10 hook. Ive also caught larger trout on inch long streamers. It pays to have different sizes and different colors. Bait can be excellent in autumn also, although worms and night crawlers might be hard to come by. Remember, live minnows are illegal hi all Utah waters, and bait la illegal in many of the local streams. No doubt about it, the water is cold, but daytime temperatures are still mild, and spring is a long it way away. Besides these few areas, all streams, rivers, lakes and reser1 voirs in this area are open year around. Lakes and reservoirs are moody. They can be terrific or terrible. For my money, this is the time of year to hit the streams and small rivers with fly fishing tackle. But remember, this is a different sport than summer fishing. To begin with, early and late in the day are the kpys to success in summer. Not so in the late fall. The middle of the day, with the suns rays hitting the water, is the best time.
