It ia unique because it is the only specific type of instruction of its kind in the entire state. It is because it isn't just a physical exercise class, a class, or a karate class, it is also a class full of multi-facete- d self-defen- one that could information, become a whole philosophy of fife for its students, and one that provides physical, mental and spiritual aspects. This class is the Teck Chien Do School of marital arts taught by Max Weiss at the Academy Mall. Weiss says this school end martial arts is the only school of its kind presently in the Utah area because it is a combination of systems. The main portion of the system taught derived from the Korean Art of Tang Soo Do, but also includes many of the hand taffhniqiMwi of the Chinese styles of Mantis and Tiger. Weiss has earned the rank of third degree black belt, being upgraded from second degree only this summer. He has been studying martial arts for over 20 years and has received instruction from reknowned masters of the art as Master Nishiyama and Master Jong H. Lee. He has been teaching this system since September 1977. . The disipline of the martial arts enters all elements of the students daily lives, Weua states. They are taught and are aided in developing their confidence, sincerity, trust, justice, and other character traits as well as strengthening their mind and body. These and the student's own personal goals and objectives, are reached through ex- tensive and rigorous physical training. Although the martial arts have received much publicity in movies and on TV in the past, it haa also received much bad publicity recently. This ljas cauawi some instructors of the martial arts to almost run from the public eye and avoid publicity. Weiss feds , that those that misuse his system can be weeded out before they get too involved. We have no time or space for those who will misuse Teck Chien Do or its teachings, he said. Those who use it as a leverage when there is an alternative do not belong. This, as with any martial art, is a deadly weapon is the body and mind of a person who has lost all spiritual and mental meaning of Teck Ch'ien Do." Wdss has four goals for his instruction. He wants to first ' develop physical conditioning, second develop the student's third their and fourth develop their This martial art, he says, relies upon discipline and the various codes which are utilized and taught to its students. e, self-defens-e. SAFEWAY Some of the codes are similar to the ancient cods of chivalry, They involve the higher ' aspects of human development and the keeping of these in mind enable the students to strive for the betterment of themselves, their families, their neighbors and of their community. But. the higher aspects of this or any system are taught gradually, only after obedience and respect are instilled. In the beginning phases of. instruction a student has to foam to obey the instructor,., lean humility and respect Then the-- ' student gradually is able to progress, through 'performance and discipline, to the higher planes of the art Students learn' to concentrate and perform techniques correctly and to achieve a focus of power. This ability is extremely valuable and are not simply the result' of thought alone. They are developed by the conscious use of the body, Weiss said. . , . Those who make home energy improvements in 1986 can qualify for a federal income tax credit, according to "Joe Fiddsted, Member Services Coordinator, Moon Lake Electric. However, the federal tax credit expires for home improvements made after this year, he says. Both homeowners and renters may take the residential energy credit The credits are subtracted directly from taxes and can be claimed even if taxpayers dont itemize deductions. Taxpayers may take a credit of IS percent of the cost of certain Fiddsted says. improvementa, The limit on this credit is $300 per home. energy-savin- Tax credits are permitted for insulation, storm windows and doors, caulking or weatherstripping, a replacement burner for a furnace, a device to make the frirnace flue more efficient, an electric mechanical furnace ignition system to replace a gas pilot light, a thermostat with automatic setback and a mater .that shows the cost of energy g used. The lessons of patience, concentration and perseverance learned by, the students have wide application outside the class and can be applied to work or other studies. Although the violent aspects of the martial arts may be one reason some students begin their studies, Weiss claims the real goal of the martial arts Is just the opposite of violence.
