Show Basin Standard (Uintah County sends two schools Eagles split State Action Duchesne's Eagles opened their State Tournament play with a game against the last team to qualify for the Tournament, Valley High School. . played Valley St. Joseph's Monday night to qualify for' the Tourney berth and then had to play the Eagles on Wednesday afternoon. Valley played an aggressive and control game that took the lead for the first quarter by four points. Although Duchesne tied the game up at 14 points (Kent Bailey's eighth point of the first quarter did the trick with 1:44 left) and again at 16 (an alley oop pass to Carl Reilley from Dave Norman) the Eagles took their time in craning alive. The quarter ended with a 16 to 20 score. By the raid Valley lead had of the half the expanded to six points several times but ended at the same four point stance, 28 to 32. In the second half Bailey8 score gave Duchesne the lead fra the first time in the game at 42 to 40 towards the end of the third quarter. Norman put hi another two points to raid the quarter Duchesne 44 and Valley 40. In the fourth quarter a few steals by Norman failed to convert but Reiley put a basket in to make the Eagle lead a ten pointer, which was the distance Valley ended the game with, ten points behind, 64 to 64. Duchesne went up against two difficult foes in the next two days, Thursday they faced North Summit - who became the State Champs - and Friday they lost to a powerful Piute team in Altamont finishes early consolation. North Summit broke the game open early and quickly for 'an as easy pass into the the Braves ran' off 16 straight points in the second period to Beal the fate of the Eagles. The final score of the contest was Duchesne 35 and North Summit Altamont had a brief postseason after they qualified to go Tournament to the State When the Longhorns beat East two weeks ago ' in Carbon ' Duchesne they ended their for the year.. They went winning on to the Regkm Tournament in Green River and to the State Tournament last week at BYU to lose their remaining games. The Longhorns beat ' East Carbon 58 to 70 and then lost in Region to Monticdlo by two points and to Whitehorse by 29 points. In opening state tournament action Altamont went up against the Region 12 champions and lost 102 to 68. The score was tied at the end of the first quarter but Piute pulled out to a ten point lead to end the half.. The rest of the game was all Thunderbird's as the Longhorns A semi-final- s, - 68. In the final day of State play for the Eagles, they faced a squad that had humiliated the Altamont Longhorns in the Tourney's opening game. Piute had overlooked a small school, ML Vernon, that became the Cinderella team and lost a 87 to 82 decision to face Duchesne in the consolation bracket. Piute just outplayed and outclassed the Eagles. The score at the first quarter ended was 19 to 11, and by half the Piutes were 35 to Duchesnes 17. Even after the half was over the team took almost the ' entire third quarter to catch fire, ending the quarter with the score 52 to 36. Again half way into the fourth the Eagles started playing steal and score ball with four or five unanswered goals, but the contest was terminal fpr the Eagles, it ended with Piute taking the win by 19 points, 73 to 54. The Eagles are in great shape next year, as Reilley, Bailey, Morten sen, Earl and Pays all return. They will be heard from again in Region and State next year. 1-- A ' struggled to stay in the game until the fourth quarter. By the 'end of the third quarter the Piute lead had increased to 22 'points, 75 to 53, and the final score was a 34 point difference. Altamont moved to the conbracket and faced solation Beaver Thursday afternoon. The Beaver team got the lead early and never let go. One' commentator termed the third quarter a blow out as Altamont suffered a 24 point lead by. the Beavers but ended the game only 13 points behind. Charlie Lamb of Altamont provided a stellar performance by leading the Longhorn scorers with 23 points for, the game. Altamont should be in good shape for next year as they have five players returning, including Charlie Lamb, Hobby Marshall, Stacy Davies, Bill Tew and Greg Roberts, are all listed as juniors and should be returning as the 6 nucleus of the Longhorn team. - '85-8- Randall Gunderson and Carl Reilley both go with two Piute players during Tournament action last week. Duchesne was eliminated from the Tournament in the Semi-Fin- GRAB HI after the lose ball the-Stat- al FIGHTING FOR Eagles Carl Reilley, number 33, and Heath Mortensen both go up after the rebound. Dispite the effort and heart the Eagles showed in the game, Piute lived up to their names as the Thunderbirds thunderstruck the Eagles. Turnovers played a minor part in the resounding loss, but Piute went on to place fifth in the tournament, after stunning both Altamont and Duchesne during the Tournament. HAND Hanberg of Duchesne lakes the fourth quarter effort to make up the lost round against Piute in the State Tournament, but. to no vail. Duchesne still lost 73 to 54.
