Although many taxpayers will still be required to keep adequate contemporaneous records in order to claim deductions, there are four situations in which the stringent rules for business use of road vehicles have now been relaxed. Those who receive more than 70 percent of their noninvestment gross income from farming may either keep records of personal use of their form trucks or keep no records and claim 80 percent business use. People who spend most of a normal business day using a vehicle to call on customers, make deliveries, or visit job sites may either keep records of ' personal use Of their car or truck, or keep no reixirdB and claim 70 percent business use of their car or 80 percent business use of their truck. Farmers may use the 70 percent rule for a car regularly used for farm business. Taxpayers who use a vehicle solely for a trade of business and keep the vehicle on their employers premises during nonbusiness hours are not required to keep a log or trip records. The residence of any employee or person who uses the vehicle will not be considered business premises. No log or records are necessary if an employer requires an employee to commute to work in a business vehicle, as long as no other personal use is permitted and the employer includes in the employees W-- income $3 per day for the value of commuting. If business records are necessary for the use of a car or truck, it is not necessary to make separate entries for each business trap during a period of unin 2 terrupted business use. entry will suffice. This fact plus public reaction could influence Congress to simply repeal the recent recordkeeping laws, revisions and all. In the meantime, unless you are certain you qualify to use one of the relaxed rules, maintain your records.
