Republican candidates provide commission views Editors Note: For the following article, four county commie-do- n candidates were interviewed. One candidate, Ronald Garff, had to withdraw hie candidacy due to a conflict with the 1939 Hatch Act. This federal legislation limits the political activities of feted employees which Garff is as an employee of the Bureau of Reclamation. Mike Miles is the youngest candidate running for county commission. He is vising for the two year seat, presently held by Alton Moon who is running young two year old, Pal N Palrares up out of the stall. The startled horse and settled down and made a clean break out of the gates. More ' fast action can been seen this weekend at Petroleum Downs as the two biggest races of' the PARES UP A dumps his jockey season are scheduled for Saturday. again this year. Miles will be 28 years of age this month and feds the younger people deserve a say in our county government He doesnt think his age will be an advantage or a handicap in the but his youthful campaign, enthusiam is very evident He has done a study in the past year,, on his own, comparing ten rural counties in Utah with Duchesne County. He states that Duchesnes budget is one of the highest in the state for a county of our size. "In the last four years the budget has gone up 76 percent and he feds there isnt much to show for the additional two million dollars in the budget Miless view is that since we have mortgaged the future with both the federal deficit and in county bonds, and since he is young enough to have to pay off the majority of those obligations, a young man should have something to say in the matter; and he does, hence his candidacy. Miles feels that as a taxpayer, a voter and an interested party, he is just as qualified to become a commissioner as any of the other candidates. And I have dons quite a bit of studying on my own to prepare myself, he stated. He u a lifetime resident of the Basin and resides in the Pleasant Valley area. He is employed in the oil industry and hopes, that if elected, he will help bring about a "better relationship with the oO patch people." He feds that mostunderof the county doesnt i stand the oilfield people. Many of than have different ways of doing things and different values but they are great people once you get to know them, he said. They may have a different attitude and view on some things. He feds the division in the county is ludicous. Not only the division betwen the oilpatch and residents, but the difference in feelings between long-tim- e communities. If we could all be more honest with each other, things would be better for all of us. Mike Miles is running against Alton Moon and both are Republicans. The Republican candidates far the four year term on the county commission are Neil White, Guy Taylor, Alva Show, LeGrand Gilbert and Ron Duncan. The first two candidates have had their views discussed in a previous article (April 19 issue, page 13). Alva Snow has been a Basin resident fin 40 years and has raised ten children out here. Ive always been so busy that I havent had an opportunity to ran, but now I have the time and Ive always had the interest, he Hs spent a lifetime in business and "I've always considered Ive had good judgement and common sense, Snow stated. As proof of his judgement and sense he has been in many leadership positions. He was the first chairman of the Roosevdt City Planning and Zoning Board, he has hdped to establish the citys planning and He has been Board and started the ball rolling to get the present hospital facility. .Snow has spent fifteen years on the Institutional Board of Utah State University the longest term of any of the members of the board and was instrumental in getting the legislation and funding for ths UBAVC and the USU Education Center brought to the Basin. His leadership in "get things organized, delegating and follow through is skat it takes in the county job, he said. He also feels that his philosphy of people with publk leadership responsibilities Is best summed up as concern for the people. Another one of the people who have thrown their hat into the ring is Ron Duncan, of Neola. Hs states he was requested to run for county commission and, "although I dont have any bones to pick with any of the other candidates, I feel I will do the best I can. Duncan has been a rancher, dairyman and fanner for 20 years in addition to having worked in the oilfield while he was farming. He has had experience on several board of directors (Utah State Water Users Board and Moon Lake Water Users Bond) as well as being the President of Dry Gulch Irrigation. He knows it is easy to sit on the outside and to criticize maybe they had a reason for making a decision that way, you dont know unless your in there." But he does want to look into a couple of areas, if elected. One is roads a little bit building better. He feds that many times the roads are built half way and he would like to see than built to make them last longer. Id like to see if we as a county could do anything about the spacing of the oil and gas wells, he mentioned. Presently, there is a way which more than one well per section can be authorized, but he hopes to make it possible fin- this procedure to be easied up; so it wouldnt be so costly and time consuming to the - Continued on page 8 FINALLY Bastian given public hearing A spark has been kindled from Ken Bastion's smoldering reaoning proposaL The City Fathers, in a eloae vote, passed a motion to grant Bastian a publk hearing to resone the first three lots in the Bummer Hills Subdivision to commercial instead of residential Bastian wants the property resoned so hs can build a convenience store in the comer of hisproperty along 200 North. The Council changed their minds on the matter so that all the misinformation and confusion over the zoning issue can be cleared up. Just two weeks earlier, the council denied a publk hearing to reams Bastion's land. Bastian appealed Ms case on the grounds that too many people don't understand the specifics of his proposaL He mentioned that he straighten out the issue and provide testimony and documented support for rezoning his land, if oily he was given a public hearing. The Council then decided to let the publk help settle this issue once and for alL Mark Stewart made the motion to schedule a publk hearing on May 21 for tile purposes of rezoning the forementioned parcel of Bastion's land. Tim Cox seconded the motion. Bill Hall abstained from voting; both Garth Sorenson and Dennis Jenkins voted against the motion snd Mayor Lawrence Yack cast the final vote in favor of a publk hearing. could |
