Show Thursday. Novmeber 17. 1983 Uintah Basin Standard 3 What's new with Roosevelt City In an effort to more fully inform the residents of RoOaevelt the issues facing us as a city and what is bring done to deal with thoae issues, the STANDARD, has gwi to accept and print a weekly letter from the Mayor dealing wish current topics of interest. It is not intended that this letter be an editorial; indeed, special effort will be made to avoid editorializing. Rather, it is intended to be a report to the public designed to inform and give account of the various matters being Roosevelt and what the City is doing about them. This week, I wish to discuss the status of the Redevelopment District framed in 1980 in an effort to revitalize and assist Roosevelts business Sfoef its community. original formation, the legislature has rewritten the law on Redevelopment Districts, lfrniting considerably the manner in which such a district can operate. The new law, while more restrictive, still presents a method by which commercial areas can hie revitalized and assisted. Aa the Redevelopment Advisory Committee (consisting primarily of downtown businessmen) has considered Roosevelt's several community needs, it has concluded that aHHlrinmal parking leads the priority list of needs in the downtown area. In order to speak to this concern, the agency is considering two measures. The first will be to help create " distance from parking. The Roosevelt Redevelopment Agency has identified at least two potential areas in which to develop such parking. One area under consideration is the property now occupied by the Standard Motel, the Polar King and possibly, other off-stre- et more and! downtown blocks. It is hoped action will help provide safe and accessible areas fra: employees of the various businesses to park. More street parking for customers would be created as a result The second measure will be to create parking in strategic locations thus placing virtually all the downtown area within a short off-stre- et Weather As the day grows shorter, tbs dusk looms redder and deeper. These builders stand to stretch for moment and watch the autumn sun before going home after a days work. In considering these potential sites, at least three objectives would be important: (1) Any buildings destroyed to make way for parking would need to be replaced within the Redevelopment District in order to increase, rather than decrease the overall tax base; (2) the parking area(s) need to be retained by or returned to private ownership as a part of the project; ami (3) a parking easement would nawi to be retained by the Redevelopment Agency in coder to assure parking benefit fra: all businesses in the District, and not just those owning the parking. there It is probably apparent that is "iiih to be considered as the City mmiiw the possibilities available in its redevelopment effort. The underlying issue u that all concerned in thi effort are benefited. All who have an interest far this matter are encouraged to become informed and let their desires be known so that Heffokwis mudfl will be based upon as much information aa can possibly be gathered. Next week, this column will imiM the issue of water and what the City is presently doing to deal with the crucial issue of providing a reliable supply at an affordable cost. If you, as the reader of this column, would like to have a particular topic dinninnod, please contact the Mayra:, any Councilman, or the City Administrator at P.O. Box 248, Roosevdt, Utah 84066. off-stre- et The weather is expected to remain Unsettled over the weekend with variable clouds and the possibility of scattered showers. She earned her bachelors degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin and a Masters and doctorate in geology from Dartmouth College. Dianne R. Nielson was named director of the State Division of 03, Gas and Mining. She is filling the post vacated by Jim Shirazi, who resigned for personal reasons. Shirazi said he resigned to return to Oklahoma, where his wife works in a high position at a university there. He is originally from Oklahoma and wanted to return to reinstate himself with hie family and friends. Nielson was appointed by Temple A. Reynolds, executive director- of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, to the 139,568 post. Dr. Nielson said she had been involved in o3 and gas exploration for 13 years, and has a good rapport with the Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining. ' I know most of the Board of Oil, Gas and Mining, said Nielson, "and physical exams, mammography, pap testing, endometrial biopsy, digital rectal exam and proctoscopy. The Caneer Society stated that mammography in particular has been neglected in Utah, with less than ten percent of women over 60 being screened annually. Mammography has also been ignored in the Uintah Basin, partially because we didnt have the equipment, said Buxton. But we are expecting to get a mammographer ereener for breast eaneer to the hospital within a short while. Annual mammography has been proven safe and effective in reducing mortality from breast cancer in multiple studies of healthy women over 60. 'Main Street Duchesne S179 Meadow Gold .1" HAMS..
