Show . J-i-- 1 Thursday. December 30. 1982 Uintah 15 Standard Basin cl com Cougars to defeating Ufes Union and Uintah have been going at it for years trying to prove which school was best. A few years ago, Uintah became a 3A school which ended the area schools rival for league standings, but the desire and pride reflected when one beats the other in sporting events has never ended. Last week the Union- - Cougars hosted the Utes to a duel wrestling match. The Cougars had been preparing for this match for weeks. They have spent extra time on the mat and in practice and some openly commented that this year should be the year. This was not the year for the win as predicted but Union was successful in winning five matches, tying one and losing six. That is about as close as the Cougars have come over the years in defeating the Utes at wrestling. Because of pins in the final matches the Utes won this years match An escape in the second period by Shane Frost ended up being the only score in his match and the winning point for Shane as he started the Cougar's off by winning the 98 pound division "It was really too close stated Union Coach for comfort, Brad Isom. Shawn Cuch had his hands full as he was beat 8--5 in the 105 pound match. Another match with loats of action was the 112 pound match. Bardett was decided the winner after three close rounds. This was done in front of a near capacity audience with many of them coming up on their feet to urge the wrestlers on. Stacy Hadlock was next on the mat to face his Uintah opponent. His match ended in a 2 tie. Each wrstler had only one or two chances to score in the evenly matched event. In the 126 pound division Ronnie Rich was pinned in the second round. Davey Nielsen pulled an upset as he came from behind and won his 132 pound match 11-Jeff Samuels pinned his man in the first round. He shoed that intent in his eyes as he first went out on the mat and it took him less than a minute to execute his desires. 34-2- seems that everytime a wrestler gets a free moment he will look over to the bench to find out what he should be doing. In this case WHAT'S NEXT COACHi- -lt Shawn Cuch seems to be asking Coach Isom what to do about his losing 5 in the UintahUnion match. 8-- Schooling Continued from page 13 State was third with 18.289b; the remaining schools were Dixie with 10.769b; Southern Utah State College with 6.219b; Snow College with 4.869b and College of Eastern Utah with only 2.09. There were two private schools listed, BYU and Westminister College. of the students There were 96.50 who enrolled in private schools that went to BYU and the remaining 3.50 who attended Westminister. The survey was released late last month by the Utah State office of Educations Division of Education Support Services, Dr. Charles Lloyd, Administrator. At 145, Mervin Glines started slower than his usual but then again he was going up against a defending 3A state champion. Mervin was behind in the match until seconds left to go in the third period where he reversed and receivWl points for a near fall. He won the match His match like many of the previous ones was all over the mat with action in every move. Kenny Anderton wrestled 155 for the Cougars and was pinned in the first round. Charles Percival was at 167 and made it to the third round before he was pinned by the defending state champion from Vernal. Ken Winn lost by a decision. This was a match that he was mentally down for' but once again the competinn was keen and he was beat. Gar Powell had his opponent on his back just as much time as he spent on his back, but was pinned in the second round after he fell into a pinning hold. When the match was over, the Cougar's found themselves way but behind the Utes in points 34-2not in the number of matches won. As in years past, the matches lost were usually close ones which in some cases could have gone either way. This year the Cougar's came out ahead in 5 matches but lost 6, which 13-1- 2. ir put them behind in point at tlu . of the duel meet. Unions size played a part in their win over the Tigers but Tabiona coach Lee Gines said the moat important factor in the game for them was that they couldn't get the ball to go in the basket. We were just cold," he said, loss. about the 58-8- 8 Gines stated that his team was also "down" mentally for the game as "Union out rebounded and just plain out hustled us. The next heartbreaker for the Tigers was the game with Tintic and their 67" . center. They lost this match Gines explained the game was closer than the final score showed as the 30-3Tigers were only behind by one, at half time and with only three minutes left in the game were only down by two. Gines was pleased with this game against Tintic because his team started 73-63- Union's Cherly Marti struggled against this Uinto tah player gain possession of the ball. The Cougars lost 53-4The Cats will host the Duchesne Eagles next the game Tuesday, January 4, and Grantsville next Thursday, January THE BATTLE 3. 6 1 scoring. He said the last few games they have only been able to muster up 38 or 40 points but this time they started hitting and against a very big man. Gary Hazel was put on Tintic' s big center and got to foul trouble during the game. Jimmy Giles scored 33 during the game with good efforts from Gary Hazel and Todd Smith. "We had our chances to win it, said Gines, "but we blew some easy layups and easy shots. Tabiona will travel to East Carbon on January 7 for their first league game. They have a couple of 6' 4" players and some good little guards," said Gines. They only lost two seniors from last years team so they are playing the year with not only some talent but some players with experience. They beat Tabiona in the last game by only three so Gines is expecting a good game this time around. Davey Nielson forces his orm and his Uintah opponant to free his leg.
