One bad bump in a pothole may be of enough to throw your front end out an checked it had if even you alignment hour earlier," said Council Chairman Donald G. Brotzman. He pointed out that correct front end alignment is essential for good tire mileage and better fuel efficiency. "If the car's steering feels much different to you, have the alignment checked immediately," he said. Ask your tire serviceman to check your shock absorbers at the same time. Potholes are caused by repeated freezing and thawing of water that aeepa into and beneath the pavement. When the temperature drops, the water freezes and expands, pushing the pavement up. As thawing occurs, the water drains away, leaving a hole under the roadway. The pavement is then broken by the weight of a vehicle, creating a pothole. Brotzman listed these tips for driving over badly damaged roads: Avoid hitting potholea if possible, but watch for other motorists when leaving your lane or swerving to miss a damaged part of the pavement; Slow down. The impact on your tires increases dramatically withpeed and can cause hidden, internal damage which could lead to tire failure weeks or months later, Apply brakes before hitting a pothole and release them just prior to impact Braking in a pothole sets up the tirewheel assembly for a solid hit against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage would occur to a tire that is rolling than one that is skidding due to braking. i i i i i i i i :fcT Jan.2 4 I V "They Came From Hollywood" |
