The boys' team placed several competitors in the State Meet scheduled for Saturday, May 15 in Price. Ron Potter placed second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.4 seconds. He was the only qualifier from Duchesne in that event. In the 200 meter dash two Eagles qualified for Saturday's meet Ron Potter placed second and Tren Grant grabbed third. The long jump was the Eagles' strong event as they captured the first three spots. Ron Potter finished first with a leap of 1911. Tren Grant jumped to second place with Roger Young finishing third. Duchesnes Grant, who set a 1A state record by in the Green River clearing 63 track meet, also qualified for State by leaping 63 in the high jump for a first place' finish. Duchesne also finished first and third in the pole vault Roger Young vaulted 122 for first place and Darren Brady finished third. Duchesne also placed in the remaining field events. Blaine Pierce placed second in the shot putt with a distance of 388". Wally Hendricks grabbed the region title in the discus with a throw of 1231 and Ron Giles finished first in the javelin with a throw of 153 feet Duchesne also qualified two relay teams for the State meet. The 400 meter relay team, consisting of Scott Ivie, Craig Bailey, Roger Young and Ron Potter placed first with a time of 47.1 seconds. The medley relay team ran a 3:56 for second place. Team members are Craig Bailey, Roger Young, Kirk Bailey and Lynn Mieure. Hie girls team had equal success in qualifying competitors for Saturday's State meet. In the 100 meter hurdles Leslie Peterson grabbed first with a time of 17.3 seconds. Laura Ivie finished third, also qualifying her for State. In the 100 meter dash Laura Ivie placed second with a time of 143 seconds. Duchesnes Shelly Young finished fourth. In the 800 meter run Lenars Mitchell placed third and in the 200 Charlene meter Arterberry placed second with a time of 28.9 seconds. The girls 400 meter relay team also qualified for the State meet Team members Charlene Arterberry, Laura Ivie, Leslie Peterson and Charlyn Moon ran a 56.8 to grab second place. The field events also proved to be a strong spot for the Duchesne girls. Sheri Johnson placed first in the shot putt with a distance of 2910" and Lisa Earl finished second with a 297". Lisa also placed in the high jump, as did Lacona Brady, both girla clearing 4 8. Duchesnes Sheri Johnson won the javeline competition with a throw of 905". She also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 152". Shelly Young placed third with a jump of 1416 ". Coach Young said both teams should be strong at the State Meet this Saturday. ' Roger (Young) has a good chance in the pole vault and the long jump, said Stan Young. He said that Tren Grant should have an excellent shot at the high jump and added that Wally Hendricks should do well in the discus competition. Young also said that Ron Potter will be tough in the sprints and the long jump. Yound said the girls team should also do well. "Leslie (Peterson) will do well in the hurdles, said Young.
