Show Editorial (Basin Standard (UJintah Basin water future lies with Congress Work on the Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project (C.U.P.) is presently at levels un- paralleled in recent years, but overall completion of the C.U.P. remains a reality of the future. However residents of the Uintah Basin should not expect anything more than what has been planned, nor should they accept anything less. While the Bonneville Unit is a drastically needed system of aqueducts and collection facilities, this portion of the project will not benefit Uintah Basin residents greatly. However, the remaining aspects of the project will provide the much needed irrigation and culinary water for Duchesne and Uintah Counties. These projects look good on paper, but little indication has been given that these projects will soon be under construction. For years Congress has slowed the progress of the C.U.P. by withholding funding and Environmental man-powe- r. impact statements have also hindered the project's progress. Presently, funding for the Bonneville Unit is, according to Project Engineer Bill White, "at a pretty good rate." And why not? What a shame it would be to complete only half of that project, thereby rendering the entire project worthless. Most likely the com IF THE CITY REALLY WANTS TO INCREASE REVENUES, THEY OUGHTA STICK PARKING pletion of that project will be realized and water will flow. But what will be the fate of the projects such as Taskeech, Whiterocks, and Uintah Dams? Will the money continue to flow from Washington? Will there be enough water in our future? There are many unanswered questions which require answers, and our Senators and Congressmen must be encouraged to provide those answers, or the impetus to elicit answers from Congress. The funding will come from Washington, but residents of the Uintah Basin must prove they have a concern regarding their future. The water from the Bonneville Unit will be transferred to the Wasatch Front. Granted, they have increasing needs for water, but are the residents of the Uintah Basin any less important, or deserving? We may believe that writing letters to our political leaders doesn't really accomplish much, but Basin Residents must make their voices, and desires heard. Our Senators and Congressmen must know that we are aware of our future needs and are moving to meet these needs. Uintah Basin residents must first help themselves. If we refuse, how can we expect help from Washington?
