Show Thursday Doce:rtr 31 Ive1 U:P.tgh Basin Standard 17 Cougar wrestlers are proving themselves Now 1500 people might not seem like lot of people, but to the Cougar wreatlers that is a full home. The Union High Cougars traveled to Box Elder Tuesday, December 22 to take on Box Elder High, a SA school with a going, traditional wrestling program. So far this year they have six wins, no losses and me tie. They have beaten Layton, second in State 2A; Tooele, 8A State champions; and took the honors at the Viewmont Tournament. The Cougars, in the last three matches, have wrestled the 3A second-in-stat- e champions- - the third in State SA champions; and the Wyoming State champions, so they are somewhat prepared for Box Elder last week. The Cougars did surprise a few, winning five matches and giving up only six for an almost 50 percent win. In fact, the two teams had won five matches going into the final heavyweight match. The final score ended up 8 in favor of Box Elder. Box Elder racked up more points because of their pinning ability. Ryan Winn, 98 pounds, started off for Union and got pinned in the first period. As assistant coach Ron Wolff said, Lloyd of Box Elder is a senior, undefeated for the year and probably one of the best wrestlers I have seen all year. Bardett Fausett stated that he was a little sick and still tired from coming down to 105 and that is why he lost a Carter is squeaker to Clay Carter, a sophomore, but Wolff pointed out he is four-timfreestyle State champion. At 112, Davey Nielsen had his hands full with Jimmy Smoot, who has yet to 36-1- 3-- 1 e be taken down this year. Wolff stated that Davey did a great job in riding and got reversal points but it wasn't enough to win, losing 5-Ferral McCook also had to change his game plan as he finally met up with someone who figured out his ability to take down, and Ferral had to ride this match. He took on Todd Thompson and beat him in another close match, racking up points with two take downs and reversals. At 126, Jeff Samuels decisioned Darrin Marble. Marble did surprise Samuels as he scored four quick points in the last quarter, only losing by two. Marble wrestled varsity last year. If you want to see what one mistake will do to a good wrestler, ask Kenny Anderton. At 132, Kenny got the take down and was riding just a bit too high when Lemmon, of Box Elder, 3. 8-- cradled on and pinned him in the first round. Wolff stated that as a sophomore, Lemmon wrestled as JV and had over 40 wins last year at 145, and "you can't afford to make a mistake with good competition. Mervin Glines, at 145 pounds, found out how good a fifth place last year 3A champion was by beating him Wolff stated it was a clasical take down match. Both men had escapes and it was the take downs that made the difference. Laird Hamblin, at 155, really turned on and decisioned his man from Box Elder He looked great on his feet, getting two take downs, stated Wolff. At 167, Shawn Carter pinned Charles Percival, of Union, in the second period. Wolff explained that Gardner was a heavyweight for two years, dropping to 167 this year and he was tough. Kenny Winn, at 185, showed how impressive he could be, building up a lot of points and then in the second round pinning Jeff Morgan of Box Elder. However, studies have shown that on the east shore of the Great Salt Lake lead levels do exceed standards set by the Pacific Flyway Council. The Wildlife Board may choose several alternatives to remedy the problem, according to Regenthal. The Board is meeting in January to make a decision on steel shot, so that vendors will have adequate time to stock steel shot if its use is adopted for the 1982 waterfowl season. team. Camron Eldredge, Kelly Sprouse, and Duane Neilsen are there to stop him. Steel shot has been required for several years on federally managed Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge. Ken Wedm-v-i- J,r The adoption of a steel shot requirement has been considered by the Wildlife Board for several years; however, this is the first year the Wildlife Board must comply with criteria concerning the use of lead and steel shot recently adopted by the Pacific Fly way Council. The criteria states that if the amount of lead exceeds a certain level in the gizzard, liver or blood of waterfowl, jaction must be taken to reduce the I lead intake by waterfowL This may be accomplished by allowing only the use of steel shot in areas of the state where lead levels have been shown to be too high or taking several other options to help eliminate the problem.
