Show United Way 8 8t Volunteer Center 2001 How do volunteers make ' Jaime Santisteven The Community Vblunteer Center just hosted their first Dog Obedience Training. Trainings were held at Creekview Elementary from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday evenings. The classes started on June 5 and continued until the 17 of July. Deb Hatt,: the trainer of the class, has partici. pated in competitive dog obedience training for twenty years, She taught the participating dogs basic obedience techniques such as sit, stay and settle. Dogs who completed all seven, classes and practiced at least twenty minutes a day were able to pass the Canine Good Citizen Test. The class had a - By has been in operation since January of 1996. Southeastern Utah It is a volunteer based seiyice that provides medical transportation to the elderly, people with disabilities, and those suffering from a chronic disease. Volunteers use their own vehicles and donate their time in transporting individuals to their appointments. The volunteers receive a mileage reimbursement in exchange for 'V.: :r'v providing this service.. Over 500 individuals have utilized this service in getting to their appointments both locally and out of the area. These individuals have been able to sustain their independence and home environment by having access to medical care. This truly makes a difference as the aging process sets in. Having a new friend, someone to listen to, someone to talk to,, someone for moral support continues to strengthen one's independence. Volunteers make a difference because they care. The love and compassion for their fellow man is a gift. A gift that they are willing to share. Over 400,000 miles have been driven since the program began. So yes, voCARE-A-VA- N - $30.00 entrance fee which benefited the Community Vblunteer Center and will be used for more educational service projects in our community. We would like to send out pur sincere appreciation to Debbie Hatt and her dogs for sharing their time and talents. The program was designed to fulfill a need in the communities of Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan Counties. This need is continuing to grow as the population of elderly continues to increase. One never knows when they may be diagnosed with a chronic disease or be involved in an accident that may change their life forever. ,We serve those in need of medical transportation with the use of volunteers. Their dedication is to be commended. The program is not state or federally funded, and without community support could end. We appreciate all those who currently support the program, and ask that others help us continue to make a difference. Dont take your vehicle or your health for granted, life holds no guar- antees.
