The primary concern to the City has been the perceived lack of consistent accountability from the Sheriffs department. The new contract is designed to correct this, with the Sheriff reporting to the Mayor and City Council at monthly Council meetings. The law enforcement agreement has not been renegotiated for more than four years. Some of the Council members felt that there were some parts of the previous contract that needed to be tightened up. The hourly pay is $28 an hour for up to 12 hours of law enforcement per period. This equates to a yearly estimated cost of $122,640 for law enforcement coverage. In previous years, the Manti City abolished their own police department and contracted with Sanpete County Sheriff. The Federal Department of Transportation is still awaiting final bid documents for the Essential Air Service contract for Moab. Several sources say that Great Lakes Aviation, a company that has not yet signed the final bid agreement, will likely get the contract when it is finally awarded. If true, that means that later this spring or early summer, passengers flying to Moab will fly through Denver, not Salt Lake Times Independent City, as has been the case in the past.
