Show Letters to the Editor THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, November Concern about Initiative B (continued from page 8) cialist. Would not the tax rate have to be 100 in order to gather enough taxes to pay everyone? The Dear Editor; A Letter of Concern to Residents of San Juan County first man was silent. We live in a country. There are hundreds of socialistic programs. A3 a nation, many of us have become very dependent on these programs. Those in power in the government love having us dependent, whether the BIA or Social Security, etc. The government, to insure its grip on us, calls its programs entitlements". This brings us back to the story of the two men in the pub. All of the money paid out through these social programs has to be taken from someone. So the love for the socialistic programs depends on whether you are on the receiving end, or among those taxpayers paying for them. Russia, Indonesia and the Eastern European countries just printed paper money to pay for the second and succeeding months' payrolls. This practice destroyed the economies and incentives in these countries. Our nation has tried various shenanigans to solve the problem of paying the second and subsequent months. Much of this deficit has been covered with borrowed money hence the national debt. Our government has covered some of the cashflow shortage by printing paper money just as Russia and Indonesia. The result has been a creeping inflation (As a lad, my mother would give me a dime. With it, I bought two loves of bread and a penny candy for each myself and my brother). The bread that now costs $1.50 a loaf has not changed. The value of our money has diminished because of the effect of the printing of paper money. Good citizens are responsibly restrained in their demands on government, and should resist the expansion of government. Government money is money taken from someone else - too often you and On November 7 you will have the opportunity to vote for the candidates of your choice and support or oppose a number of initiatives on the ballot. Initiative B, if passed, will effectively destroy tools law one of the most effective crime-fightin- g enforcement has asset forfeiture. As a career law enforcement officer, I have seen how effective asset forfeiture can be in the fight against crime. The production and sale of illegal drugs is all about one thing, making money. Therefore, one of the most effective ways to combat this crime is to take away the property and profits acquired through this illegal enterprise. Proponents of Initiative B want voters to believe that law enforcement officers are out of control and seize the property of innocent people who are not connected with illegal activity. Such is not the case and the facts prove it. In November 1999, the office of the Legislative semi-socialist- ic - - me! Finally, the courts provide additional oversight to ensure lawT enforcement has played by the rules and there is a clear connection between criminal activity and the property being considered for forfeiture. The 1999 Legislative Auditor Generals report states, Sufficient controls are in place to prevent law enforcement agencies from abusing their authority to seize assets. Law enforcement officers and prosecutors in Utah oppose Initiative B, because if it passes they will lose one of the most effective tools they have to combat d crime. Just think about it from a common sense prospective. What enterprise can survive if the profit is taken out of it? Please join me and help Utahs law enforcement officers stop the proliferation of illegal drugs within our state by voting NO on Initiative B. Thanks for your time. Please remember to vote on November 7. Sheriff Mike Lacv drug-relate- Auditor General released a detailed performance audit of asset forfeiture procedures in Utah. That report states, Contrary to what is said by critics of Utahs asset forfeiture laws, the law enforcement community is not abusing its authority to seize and forfeit assets. Law enforcement is not taking the property of individuals without due process... We did not find a single innocent bystander who lost their property to asset forfeiture. What some people dont understand is that there are numerous safeguards already in place within the justice system designed to protect people and their rights. The United States and Utah Constitutions require law enforcement officers to have probable cause to conduct searches and seizures. The police must independently validate information provided by confidential informants. County attorneys must review and approve of actions - 1.
