Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, November 1, 2000 - Page 3 Utah House Of Representatives candidates jttaeagtfiBjateastiag V I appreciate the chance to let voters know the differences between my opponent and me. I have enjoyed representing District 71 and have appreciated the support of the people in the most diverse region in the State. This is an especially interesting race as this is the first time I have been challenged by someone with legislative experience. I believe this works in my favor as there is a clear record of performance from both of us. The House records reveal a weak performance from my opponent. He served four years and passed a total of 3 minor bills. During his last two years, he accomplished nothing. of record My My opponent represented an urban district in Salt Lake County. Rural issues are much more difficult to gain support for, as there are far fewer rural representatives. Just how effective do you think my opponent will be with rural legislation, when he didnt succeed with urban issues? My opponent states its a matter of rural vs. urban. If hes right, who do you think can succeed with rural issues: someone in the majority party from rural Utah or someone from the minority party who represented urban Utah? providing adequate legislation represents hard issues for rural to be excluded Utah. during the majority caucus meetings when important legislative decisions are record for getting things done for Southeastern Utah. I have addressed some of these things in my campaign but there are many more and they will increase as we more clearly identify the issues and develop solutions for them. As part of my campaign I am dedicated to that effort aiid would appreciate your support of these issues and others that you call to my attention. The purpose of this piece is to put forward my platform. However, I think it is important for the voters to also understand my philosophy. In the many years I have served in the Utah House and Senate, I have learned a few things. Foremost is that my primary job is as a conduit for the beliefs of my constituents. That is what representative Democracy is all about. I a am conservative I Democrat. believe in the usually isnt). I am a Legislator and proud of it. However, party doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Despite what the news media will tell you, the most important thing in the legislature isnt Democrat vs. Republican, it is Urban vs. Rural. All of your local elected officials and legislators should work closely together, regardless of party. You don't need philosophy, you need clout. Tb the issues, my priorities are (not neccesarily in this order): - Redistricting. The 2000 census will force us to 1- redraw the districts and I want to keep Second Amendment (and all the others as well) and believe southeastern Utah as a viable political that the federal force. government should consult the local citizens and be strongly influenced 2 - Highways (including 191).
