The San Juan Record HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER FOR SAN JUAN COUNTY. UTAH SINCE 1915 AN AWARD WINNING NEWSPAPER Publisher - Editor BILL BOYLE Dear Editor: The dust has settled; the pins have been set ir. my hip; newspaper articles have been written and read, and I am left to contemplate all the events of the last few weeks, as well as this season of school and athletics. I appreciate all the love and support that has been shown me. I would like to recognize the many others who have helped me. I would like, especially, to pay tribute to all my team mates, who have trained hard individually and have encouraged and supported the other team members. There are only a few varsity girls returning next year, but those who come into this group will benefit from the legacy of the team work! A special thanks to Coach Sanford Randall who spent hours running with his team, encouraging us and pushing us to train better. I see this in many of the coaches and teachers of all events at MHS. I applaud their determinaion to work with and bring out the best in the star players as well as the support players. I would like to thank all the parents who are always at the meets. At the State Cross Country Meet, the parents and families were a great support to us all. There are so many unsung heroes at our high school. Nanette Redd's foot injury, illnesses, torn shoulders and knees, acute mono, and other injuries disrupt participation. There are also team members who practice all season only to play a few minutes in the games, bui I'm sure there are many other personal goals and dreams which have been met. I am so proud to be one ofthe many wonderful athletes of MHS all of whom deserve great recognition. We have a great school. I really appreciate the continual support and friendship of schoolmates, friends, faculty, and community. Our senior class has always worked together and enjoyed each other's friendship. There is a great attitude at school; students wish to excel and to make this the best year ever at MHS. We should have been recruiting doctors rather than allowing imlitical shenanigans to drive them away from our hospital. Because of the lack of physicians and the political wars in the San Juan Hospital, it has lost its Credibility with much of the public. Twenty years ago, I)rs. Goon and Smith had the loyal support of not only Monticello, but also Dove Creek, Cahone, and Eaivtiaml. Thin xup)Mrt is gone. The hospital now languishes with huge ex reuses and low income irecause of too few patients. Nothing would please me more than to see the hospital prosper. Alas it is bankrupt. It is dying and on life support. It is able to remain in operation only by transfusion of tax money from the county. Our county can only subsidize to a limited extent. It appears to me that in spite of noble effort, bankruptcy is going to force the closure ofthe San Juan Hospital. It is only a matter of time. Rather than looking back at our mistakes, lets look ahead for opjMirtunitios. Negotations with the State could be started to turn the hospital into a melhnmphctamine treatment center. This could infuse several million dollars into our ailing facility. San Juan County is a golden epjMirt unity for a group interested in a research facility. The Native Americans have been free of cancer - an observation that pleads for study. Type I diabetes is apparently absent among Native Americans. This too lx'gs investigation. Coronary disease is rare also. I lielieve, with the right leadership, the hospital could be a research have not lieen a great advocate of another hospital in the county, hut in view of the failure of the San Juan Hospital to come even close to paying its own way, I suspect its closure is inevitable. We would be better oil' as a county with a private hospital in Blanding, than with no hospital at all in the county. Alternatively, we can close the schools, lire all the jxJicemen, and let the roads go to pot - then the county can afford to continue to support our sinking ship. Intracable parties need to change Dear Editor: Doing it the hard way is always easier" Murphys Paradox The real tragedy of the San Juan Health Care system, involving the proposed and incumbent hospitals and community health care is that it needn't be, not at all. Maybe some of the intractable parties need to be LESS intractable and get the community together with one goal...forget the power plays, the money games, and build the community a hospital they can be proud of. Coming out ofthe San Juan High School meeting, a stranger stopped to speak with my friends and myself, and his impression was that the Medical Director of the hospital in Monticello and the board members need to do some down grading of their individual needs, wants, and particularly their egos. He just may be right.
