Why are Native American communities nd small businesses being shunted aside by the Economic Board while large corporations and favored companies are being actively solicited and promoted? travel-orient- ...y. yu..u.i iMiMraiiv-TOwasimw- itsF fi ed .,. EKLECTICA CEDAR MESA CALLING FOR HELP In the last issue of the Zephyr I covered a number of the problems besetting Cedar Mesa and Grand Gulch. At that time die draft Environmental Assessment (EA) was not yet out It is out now and ready for comment. The EA can be had by writing to Kent Walter, Area Manager, San Juan Resource Area, PA Box 7, Montfcello, Utah 84535. Or phone BLM at (801) Ask for the free Cedar MesaGrand Gulch Visitor Contact Station EA. I'm sure they'll be most happy to send document to you. (And you might chat with Mr. Walter while you're at it) this The BLM is proposing site selection and construction of a new facility fra1 visitor contact and field administration at Cedar Mesa. Mr. Walter writes that: COFFEE 587-214-1. I 6 COLLECTIBLES 352 N. MAIN ST. 259-689- I 6 39-pa- ge Monday-Thursda- Sunday: i The new facility would provide a permanent focus for BLM administration and ranger operations at Cedar Mesa. Plans for the proposed structure include an office space for ranger activities, public space for dispensing information in the form of small displays, map and book sales, and a small audio-vide- o area. An outdoor space near the would entrance accommodate small informal group gatherings, building BLM bulletin board information and organized briefings by rangers, when the station is dosed. Send for it and see. The public comment period for the document is 60 days, beginning cm June 21, 1996 and ending August 23, 1996. Two early "information meetings snd an "open house have been scheduled by BLM. The first meeting will take place in Blanding, Utah on July 17 at the Edge of the Cedars beginning at 7:00 p.m. The second meeting will be held at the La Plata County Extension Building in Durango, Colorado beginning at 7:00 p.m. And an open house has been scheduled on July 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kane Gulch Ranger Station, the location of the proposed visitor center. By die time the Zephyr reaches you, the meetings will be over. I shall of course cover the events and take dose notes. In addition it is hoped that the environmental community can schedule its own hearings and informational meetings in selected towns prior to the EA deadline for comments. BLM refuses to conduct any hearings - such as in Salt Lake City or in Denver or Boulder, Colorado. Many hikers that frequent Cedar Mesa and Grand Gulch hail from these areas. I plan to make presentations of opposition to this project at both of these dries. Further development of Cedar Mesa must stop. Mr. Walter's "Finding of no Significant Impact flies in the face of all reason. Should the visitor center be built, hordes of additional people with their motorized homes and car campers will descend on Cedar Mesa clogging even more. The center would attract people like a carcass draws the canyons and mesa-totake to out a few roads as Abbey once recommended. This preferred flies.. Better, alternative would surely decrease all kinds of traffic. (BLM didn't consider this option). Our wilderness and primitive areas on Cedar Mesa will surely suffer should this structure be built. So much has been destroyed already. No monstrous concrete-bloc- k to we can continue longer destroy the very things people come to see and enjoy. BLM has no I rangers patrolling Cedar Mesa full time. The only two hired rangers must of their most time at their office contact station at Kane Gulch. To spend $500,000 spend of total the cost) on a project such as this at a time when ranger patrols are so (part desperately needed is ludicrous and contemptible. Those of you who love these canyons can indeed make a difference. And those of you who want more information or want to get involved concerning the above hearings and activities ought to write me - Ken Sleight, Box 1270, Moab, Utah 84532 - or phone me at V4 iff. -- 4 I B) i OJ(U ss tUtf v y pj0) ill! i v $p $ ! flip:; - WESTERN ARTIFACTSWADVERTISINC'ART EINIGEE FOODS & EXOTIC EDIBLES EECM ps (801) 259-857- THE DESERT DINED 1 51 3IDPqMiuaEtHiiiEnitgSl 352 North Main SL Moab a Texs Riverways t?77 VYY 3-- D V RIVER VISIONS, INC.
