Show PAGE 39 THE ZEPHYR AUGUST 1994 (Next time we will prepare a list of acceptable adjectives that we an use two or three times each day. We may make up some new words, some Creek, Latin, ftendi, German, and maybe sane Esperanto!) After being asked to leave Durango, GO because we refused to carry bottles of Evian Water (most of die people, whole families, in fact, looked like Bart Simpson's little sister, the one who sucks on the pacifier). Then Mesa Verde, hot dangerous drive, jammed, but a spiritually moving place. Then Moab We checked into the Days Inn, reasonable, dean. At the Visitors Center, where we were advised by a fellow tourist, NOT to go up to the Arches in the afternoon, but instead to drive up the Petrogjyph road, then the Arches in the a.m. We loved the glyph's road (Potash Road?). We spent several hours on both sides of the Colorado. I have some marvelous photos! Then we found an excellent where we had a great chef salade, and where we found a copy of your ZEPHYR. It Is, to me, foe most original, amusing but serious and responsible papermagadne that I've ever seenread. It's difficult for me to sort out the feelings that the experience of those rocksmoun tains along with your fears and complaints about growth change that I had then and since. Any literate sane person has to be against thoughtless growth; and any responsible person tries to do something to stop it You have talent and a strong social conscience. Don't waste valuable time and energy on simple human greed and ignorance. Cut 'em off at the pass. Example: to stop outsiders from buying real estate for speculation, pass a local law on rent control. Pass a local law to stop multiple-dwellin- g ownership. Track, in die ZEPHYR, every meeting of the city council (or whatever) to make certain it is doing its duty to the town. You can't keep out the yuppies. They are just as ambivalent as you and I about grubbing for dollars while searching for spiritual uplift and peace of mind. Mountain tops are good for this; so are deserts. That's why the ancients and modems wentgo there: to get away from themselves and their fellowman. Let die yuppies pay for the poor folks! All my life I've had to rethink my belief that man is more good than evil. In feet, I don't believe in good and evil; but in side and well; and in ignorance and education. Anyway, Jim, read some mere history, if you haven't already. It will remind you that we have made great progress. It's only been 120 years since we formed our first National Park! I was a minority 50 years ago in my attitude about the environment And you must have been, as well. (How old are you? 40?) I won't see it, but you will see what this generation of school kids will do. And don't worry about people and cars and bikes wearing out Canyonlands. Just help pass some laws to make 'em park underground; and limit signage in Moab. (Where is that godawful tourist trap with the huge white letters on the front of a mountain? South of Moab or North? That place ought to be purchased and restored! Start a campaign to raise money to buy it) Keep up fee good work. If we can figure out how, we'll return to Moab someday. saloon-restaura- NIGHTLY EARLY BIRD nt, mad-sculpt- SPECIAL or Served 6:00 to 7:00 pm Mh&tQnm Pasta of the Sabi Toen&ng Manmade Ice Cream $935 92 Center St open 7 days Reservations E. state accepted 259-429- 5 liquor licensee Cordially, John W.
