Show THE ZEPHYR OCTOBER 1992 PAGE 23 & honest work for the boys; and we ought to be able to hire them for a couple of hundred thousand dollars a year, and deposit all the rest of the money we'd have spent on the stupid road to Vernal in the bank or in our schools. Just so that they can feel like real men, maybe we should throw in a new pickup for each of them (and they could use a pickup anyway to pull those little trailers that the yard deanup crews use to haul their lawnmowers and stuff)- Picking up litter along the highways, cleaning up campsite garbage left by the tourists, shoveling the snow off Moab's "Four Season" Golf Course, there are so many wonderfully useful things we could hire the boys to da But because we're fools, we're probably going to hire them to build us that loser of a road Vernal. to It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the money it will cost us to build it. It's that it will hurt us to have the road built The BEST case scenario is that the road will fail to dump more tourists into the Moab area. The WORST case scenario is that the Economic Development pimps are right and the road will bring a lot more traffic through Moab. Either way we lose. Ether we lose the money spent on the road and nothing happens (hopefully), or we not only lose the money we spend on the road, but we also have to spend even mare money to take care of the additional tourists that flow through Moab. Sure, a few motel and restaurant operators will make more money, but for most of us who live here, the added number of tourists in the area would only decrease our quality of life (and our taxes would be going up, both to fund the road, and to hassle with the tourist problems). Which would you rather have? Higher taxes, more tourists in your favorite place, and a road to Vernal? Or higher taxes, and Jimmie Walker and foe boys, mowing your lawns, hauling your garbage putting gravel on your driveways, and shoveling your snow (which of course never falls in balmy Moab, except in the cross country ski area)? - Poplar Place Pub & Eatery 100 North and Main St Moabs Legendary Dining & Drinking Establishment HEY BIKERS!
