Show THE ZEPHYROCTOBER 1992 PAGE 15 This is getting to be a tradition that I could really do without. I believe I may have complained in print about these insects before, but the crickets have returned and I haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks. In Kentucky, crickets stay outside and chirp softly in the still of a Southern evening and truly add to the ambience. It's bad luck to kill crickets. Jiminy Crickrt and all that. Jiminy Cricket, my ass. In the West, crickets are big cockroaches on speed. It's me or them..one of us has got to go. They are also capable of "throwing their voices" better than any human ventriolquist I have ever seen. Last night; at 3AM, I spent the better part of half an hour, trying to track down one of these chirping demons in my bed room. I even got out my stethoscope in an effort to track down the little bastard's location. With a flashlight in one hand, friends forgive me), a stethoscope plugged to my a can of toxic chemicals in the other (may all my organically-grow- n I clad in and boxer tarten ears, shorts, crawled ever so silently across the rug (for the only plaid my very stylish slightest noise or vibration will cause them to stop chirping and you'll stand there like a statue for the next 10 minutes, waiting for him to resume his shrill mantra, or the entire search and destroy mission will have been for nothing). I finally confined the chirping to the northeast comer of my bed room, but could not get him to show himself. I was determined, however, so I outlasted the miserable little bug. I hunkered down by the chest of drawers and waited. When he finally got over confident I nailed him with my new penny loafors...I save the toxic spray for those confrontations. My journal indicates that last year, my first "cricket-free- " night did not come until October 8, so I can expect the Cricket Wars to continue for a while longer. Until then, I encourage all of you to approach me at your own risk. A man who spends half the night killing crickets in his underwear could crack at any moment. .
