Show t- - THE ZEPHYR JUNE 1990 PAGE 26 Some clarification Is necessary. The majority of the bikers are well mannered law folk and not all of them are from out of town. A fair number of offendng cyclists are abiding It locals. only takes one bad encounter to sour an Individual on a whole group. The law concerning bicycles Is very clear! In essence. It says that a cyclist has all the rights and all the duties as If he were driving a car, with Just a few exceptions. Here are a few of these exceptions: 1. Do not attach to any moving vehicle upon a highway. 2. If you are riding a bicycle upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the condMons then existing, you are required to ride as near as practical to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway except: a. When passing another bike or vehicle traveling In the same d recti on; b. When preparing to make a left turn; c. When reasonably necessary to avoid fixed objects, traffic hazards, etc. 3. Don't ride more than two abreast, and If you're Impeding traffic by riding two abreast, you are required to move. 4. If there Is more than one lane you are required to remain In a single lane. 5. Moabhas welcomed now afraid that many Moabites are of the opinion that we have too much of what has usually been considered a good thing. The subject matter of the majority of my previous articles has been less than serious. The following comes more from my occupational side than from the personal angle. In the beginning there were a few mountain bikes In town. Then came several more. The locals thought this to be an Interesting phenomenon. A phenomenon which was easily absorbed and accommodated by the people of Moab. One morning we woke from a peaceful rest and discovered that not unlike rabbits, the Interest phenomenon had multiplied In proportions that defied mathematical description. In what seemed like an Instant, the numbers went from several and several more to I'm new-com- ers thousands. The sidewalks of the downtown area have become a pedestrian nightmare at times. Large groups of cyclists ride through side streets five and six abreast, blocking a complete lane of traffic. Animosity on the part of the locals has grown, at times to the breaking point Much to my surprise, there Is not a motor vehicle with a Fisher Mountain Bike and rider embedded In the grill dally! roup at center stage 8. If you don't want to make a left turn as a car would, then you may cross with a light as a pedestrian. 9. State law requires that turns be signaled by a rider when reasonable. 10. Racing Is strictly prohibited. There are several other minor requirements that I wont go Into here, but If you want to go "Gonzo, do It In the dirt Another thing that everyone needs to know Is that the Moab Police Department will enforce these provisions. One last problem to address. For you who have decided to Join the rest of us as a "local," Is your vehicle registered?
