His announcement is simple, yet momentous: "I have, just received, a note from the Japanese government in reply to the message forwarded to that government by the' Secretary of State of Aug. 11. 1 deem this reply a full acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, which specified the unconditional surrender of Japan. Thousands of miles away off the coast of Japan, the 2,700 men of the USS Missouri, flagship of. the Pacific Fleet, are still on alert scan. ning the skies for enemy aircraft and keeping watch on and under the ocean for enemy ships and submarines. . One of those men is 19 year old Anthony E. There crew, relates Tony. "Many of us were still apprehensivie. (And for good reason: Five Japanese pilots attacked the fleet that morning, only to be shot down by Navy gunners.) Oh August 29, the Missouri heads for Tokyo Bay. "I was pretty scared going into Tokyo Bay, says tony. "I and a lot of my buddies didnt know if it was' a trap or If Japan really meant it. The Missouri made it into the bay without incident. Tony and his shipmates' began the extensive preprations necessary for the formal surrender ceremonies to be held on the Missouri on Sept. 2. Included in those prepara. tions: Getting the United .States flag in place (the same flag that had flown over the nations capitol on T ec. 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day) so it could be run up the main mast during the surrender ceremonies. "Obviously, the ship and all the men needed to be ship- shape," says Tony. "We stripped off all the old paint on the deck and repainted it. Sept. , 2 was overcast. Hundreds of newsmen from a host of countries began arriving on toe Missouri around 7 a.m. "Each member of the crew was decked out in their dress whites, relates Tony. Tony says toe crew was in position a good hour before that, but that there was no horseplay. "We were all very serious. Shortly before 9 a.m., the Japanese foreign minister, ShigemitSu Mamoru came aboard. "He was dressed in a tuxedo (morning coat) with a top hht, relates Tony. "He was stiff and very formal. Solemn is a better word. He wasnt smiling. And neither was Gen. MacArthur. "The surrender ceremony wias conducted over a loudspeaker, says Tony. A lot of the crew, Tony included, did not see the actual signing ceremony. But everyone heard Gen. MacArthur, facing toe Japanese delegation, say, "We are gathered here, representatives of the major warring powers, to conclude a solemn 11-mem- . agreement whereby peace may be restored. The issues, involving divergent ideans and ideologies', have been determined on the battlefields and hence are not for our discussion or our debate. Itis my earnest hope, indeed toe hope of all mankind, that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of toe blood and carnage of toe past ... Tony remembers being "very proud.
