Show THE ZEPHYR/OCTOBER-NOVEMBER sabotage as terrorism, which in essence dehumanizes by placing corporations, material things, “property,” and people on the same ontological level and simultaneously denies the most profound and deadliest Terrorism among us: the terrorism leveled against this Earth, our home (yes, I’m indebted here, again and as so often, to the ever-inescapable Ed Abbey). Environmentalism must acknowledge and embrace the toothy and the savage of the wild, not just its more peaceful and ordered aspects and beauties—in outings (how many are canceled due to “weather,” etc.?), in writings (ecoporn), etc., etc., etc. Among our gentle but false myths of nature, though it should allow for individuals with tweaky consciences to choose otherwise, is that environmentalists should be meat eaters, even fishers and hunters. But that lies outside of the Agribusiness paradigm (which unfortunately includes many large-scale “organic” corporations) as possible. We should become reacquainted with what we eat, and recognize that our own organic nature is omnivorous. 2008 Like most movements, Mainstream Environmentalism tends to lack a sense of humor (especially a self-deprecating or self-effacing one). It needs to develop or renew one. One final seeming paradox logically follows: in taking themselves too seriously, they are not taking themselves seriously at all. Humor provides perspective, distance, humility, and-numerous mechanisms for making serious points. Ed Abbey knew this; Earth First! also did once upon a time. In short, ME must become non-ME, anti-ME. tions in every sense. We must work to end the Me-Genera- As a people, we all have lived too long in the United States of Denial, as humans are wont to do. We should again imitate Luther, who, chided by his great intellectual friend Erasmus to “Let God be love,” responded, “Let God be God.” How can we possibly go about doing similarly with environmentalism? By, like Luther, saying “Here I stand” to the above theses and more. Yes, by denial--but also by affirmation. And that someday, we'll all get eaten, some of us occasionally by a wild animal, all of us ultimately by the earth. The false idea(l)s of materialistic progress, Technocracy, and Scientism, including our strange misplaced faith in them, must be resisted. It must avoid thinking everything it subscribe to or does should be reduced to logic and reason—they too are anti-wild and have done more than their share to put this world into the binds that make a prisoner of it.
