Builders of Memansions, property speculators, drivers of Hummers and riders of $3,000 bikes are a few of his choice targets, especially when the bikers wear Lycra. Blue lycra ticks him off the most. Stiles, like way too many polemicsts, disdains tourists too. He admits that when he's a tourist himself, he's disoriented, but he still laughs at Moab visitors for being stupid. Where does that tradition come from? The one that says anyone who's away from home is an object of scorn? Stiles hates even more the people who build the fast-food joints, motels and franchised backcountry tours that prey on those tourists. They wreck the land and raise house prices. But he’s uncharacteristically tactful, perhaps even timid, about national political alliances. He acknowledges that Utah is the most Republican and conservative state in the union and that he disagrees with that position but that's about it. Perhaps he isn’t wild about people who listen to Rush Limbaugh, but there's no full-throated horror at the prospect. Why not, if he's in the reviling business? Let me assure you, Brave New West is the book you've been craving for 18 years. Why is Brave New West so timely? Perhaps because it reminds us that we are a culture that has lost the ability to value anything not measured in dollars. In a time in which our business ethics tried to get us to ignore human induced global warming and the real motivations for invading Iraq, maybe we are in a better position to profit from this book.
