composed of practically all the big beet sugar manufacturers in the united states will be taken this week when articles of incorporation will be filed according to judge henry W V the temporary president the organization will have an initial capitalization of which will be representative senta tive of all the sugar manufactory ies in the country and the purpose is to grow at home ample beet seed to care for the sugar beet crop in america in order that no delay might be occasioned casio ned in preparations for signing contracts f tor or next jasons crop which in all probability will be grown from home cultured seed judge said that lie he as temporary president and thomas R cutler tile the temporary vice president of salt lake were going ahead with laying the ground work that would make the company a practical organization in every respect judge said that the expense incident neiden t to the cultivation of the seed would be no object and that it the initial insufficient the capitalization would be raised to a million dollars it necessary the officers of the organization will not be named until an election is held but three trustees will be selected to look after the interests of the company until the election according to the plans plane of the company seven directors will be named two from california two front from utah two from colorado and one from michigan inasmuch as the beet seed growing will be confined largely to utah and idaho an executive committee will probably be selected with headquarters in salt lake which will be the headquarters of the company the organization of the company Is one of the results of 0 the recent convention of beet sugar manufacturers held in salt lake on account of the european war more or less difficulty has been experienced during the past year in obtaining seed for the sugar beet crop in america some american companies have been experimenting in beet seed culture for upward of twenty years but mostly with indifferent success the companies in utah and idaho have obtained better results ellan those of other sections and during 1915 raised ample seed tor for the 1916 rop crop the experiments have proved conclusively that utah and idaho are better adapted to beet seed raising 1 bilk than any sections yet tried in america and inasmuch as the germans refuse to send seed to america except in exchange for provisions which is prohibited by the allied powers the only salvation for the beet sugar industry in america is in home grown seed it if normal conditions obain at the close of the european war some doubt has been expressed as to whether america can compete with the germans and russians in beet seed culture on account of the low wages paid in foreign countries but the manufacturers decided that it would be unwise to toi take chances on an early end to the war besides they figured that by gro growing fiig seed aeed in the united states even at a higher cost a supply of fresh seed would always be available the first step toward growing seed next year has already been taken W 11 II a german expert who has been superintending super intending the efforts of the utah idaho sugar company during the past three years lias has been engaged to superintend the work of the new company mr air is now trying to arrange to get pedigreed seed from germany he has spent some time in russia and Is of the opinion lon that it if his efforts in germany prove futile some ot of the needed seed may be obtained from russia in the meantime he Is busy in the beet districts selecting commercial beets and storing them in silos next nest spring the beets will be taken from the silos carefully inspected and the best beat will I 1 be used to grow next years crop the seed from the commercial beets in the past has proved better than the imported seed it Is estimated that approximately tons 0 of beets will be stored winter for seed purposes next year mr air Winter balter is now imaging making his headquarters in san francisco 1 but as soon as the new company gets started lie probably will make his home in in salt lake but there is a limit to the use ot of commercial beets for seed purposes and then pedigreed seed must be obtained from europe tor for the or mother beet at least the lins seed must come from europe until such a time as seed can be bred in america and this will be one of the matters that will be given attention by the new company The pedigreed seed is planted and mother beets are raised the first year and the following year the mother beets raise the seed for tile the commercial beets thus one or more years are required to grow tile the seed for the and it requires two more years to convert that seed into commercial beet seed during the past season it Is es timet ed that approximately bags of seed were raised in utah and idaho ample seed to care tor for the utah and I 1 idaho beet crops in 1916 0 ogden den ex arinner ai inner |
