Show A HUNTERS PARADISE utah great state for game according to bounty payments abe arrest of charles jones of salt lake city on a charge of extensive bounty frauds in salt lake county has revealed a deplorable state of affairs in both salt lake and weber counties salt lake county has issued sup fraudulent bounty certificates hotalling totalling to talling 13 between october 1 1904 and janavry 3 1905 while in we ber county 11 is the sum paid out for the supposed extinction of wild animals at ogden on tuesday W R swan an employed in the office of the county clerk and A H conlisk member of a prominent family of the junction city were arrested on a charge of being am directly in the fraud mr conlisk has been employed as assistant ticket seller at the union depot but since last april has made at in support ot claims to the ex tent ol 01 2 50 the form of affidavit piled out by him and by all others col electing bounty money jegu ires that they make oath to having killed the animals themselves and within the past sixty days according to the bounties paid out the slaughter of wild animals in we ber county was phenomenal during the past few months during the entire year of 1904 12 was paid in boun ties for coyotes wildcats wolves mountain lions and bears supposed to have been killed in that part of the state the coyote Is the popular wild animal among the hunters of weber county as well as in salt lake county during the year 5 coyotes were made to bite the dust in addition to these wolves were slaughtered 96 wildcats mountain lions and 1 45 bears salt lake county appears to be the camplon hunting grounds of the horld however and has at least tour hunters whose names will long be re by ordinary sportsman ac cording to bounties paid edward king killed 1685 coyotes wildcats wolves mountain lions 41 bears during the past hunting season while edward cooke slew coyotes wildcats 94 wolves 73 mountain lions and 12 bear james german collected bounty on coyotes wildcats wolves 42 mountain lions and 15 bear while george king succeeded in bag gang only coyotes wildcats 65 wolves 5 mountain lions and 3 bears there seems to be no end to the bounty frauds perpetrated in the state and it Is believed that at least 75 has been paid out on fraudulent claims th matter has been taken up by the legislature and it la probable the bounty law will be repealed more arrests in connection with the extensive frauds are expected |
