| Show TAKEN FROM LARAMIE JAIL AND HANGED six members of the mob were wounded by the desperate convict before he was overpowered A special from laramie wyo says that joe martin a negro was taken from the county jail at about 8 clock monday evening and hanged six members of the mob were wounded by the convict before he was overpowered by the mob the lynching took place in front of the residence of district judge car penter in the eastern part of the city where the victim of the mob s ven geande was dragged after he was tak j en from his cell the lynching is the first one that has occurred in laramie for a num ber of years and was caused by the attempt of martin to kill a girl tn the lambly of the jailer martin was a trusty and was em aloyed around the jail which gave him access to the family quarters of the jailer delia crouse a white girl was employed in the family and mar tin was assisting her in the when he made advances to thel rt reprised this incensed martin who grabbed a butcher knit and slashed the girl s face and neck six times inflicting horrible wounds the screams ot the girl brought help of the jailer s family and others and martin was overpowered taken into the and locked in a cell A mob of 2 enraged men soon gathered at the jail and the keys were taken away from the officers it was found necessary to break the door of martins cell with sledge hammers finally the door yielded to the mob and they rushed into the cell martin made a feard il fight using portions of a bed which he had broken ap and his fists and six of the mob were more or les severely injured before he was overpowered once in the handa of the mob a rope was placed aromnd his neck and he was dragged through the street until the borne of district judge car penter was reached at this point the mob stopped the rope was quickly thrown over a crosspiece on a tele phone pole and he was strung up two bullets were then fired into his body these did not produce death and he slowly strangled to death |
