and religious tension Amos releases these themes in a sort of cathartic style with her piano on her latest release "Under the Pink" "Under the Pink” is the d follow-u- p to her 1991 "Little release Earthquakes" On her new effort Amos conquers many of the familiar themes she explored on her last outing but with more aggression and production 01 the first single "God" Amos uses a screeching electric guitar and the programming of boyfriendrecord producer Eric Rosse to convey the eagerly-awaite- message that sometimes God does not come through It seems frustration with religion is something that Amos knows a lot about Amos was raised by a father that is a Methodist minister and she vents the pressure she must have felt growing up under a strict rule as a child on "Icicle" Here Amos sings "I think the 'good book’ is missing a few pages" and "Getting Off Getting Off while they're all downstairs singing prayers" Amos leaves no skeletons in her closet Don't let all this talk of religious questioning and heavy production make you feel as if Amos is through with writing emotional ballads On "Baker Baker" Amos strips down leaving only her piano and a light string accompaniment to let the listener feel the bare truth in her voice It is this voice that often ranges from a hush lo a roar which has given her comparisons to another goddess of the pop world's more eccentric side—Kate Bush There is a song on Amos' last album where she makes a reference to nine-inc- h nails although she probably was not speaking of the influential industrial band she did however manage to get that band's leader Trent Reznor to lend a guest vocal on "Past the Mission" a song that starts out with a quirky 70's feel then abruptly moves into a powerful chorus "Under the Pink" claws at the surface of Amos' exterior and is sure to be just one in a long line of Amos successes pink-femini- j S Stormie Sanchez-Ulibar- ri ne Campus Movie Night Every Tuesday Happy ! j 20th I Birthday I Hope
