Show CEU Friday April 15 1983— 7 Intramural softball "Butch " survives the crew cut By Jim Stoker of the Eagle staff Johnny “Butch” Morgan shows a quality of baseball and enthusiasm rarely seen at CEU Morgan whose statistics show him good enough to play at a higher level of baseball may have missed his chance because of poor grades Morgan has played 13 years of baseball and in his previous two years had a batting average of over 400 both in high school and American Legion baseball in Salt Lake Defensively Johnny was one of the outstanding shortstops in the state said his teammates One would think that these incredible statistics would take him to a higher caliber of ball but obviously they did not and when asked what he thought held him back he replied “1 believe if I would have stayed in school and kept my grades up I would have had a much better shot at a bigger school” When Morgan graduated from high school he decided that bad grades were not going to stop Mm He traveled to the College of Southern Idaho where the Pittsburgh Pirates organization were having a tryout When the tryouts were over Morgan found himself one of the 18 ballplayers left out of the 112 that tried out Unfortunately for him they decided to release the last 18 So he decided that he was through with baseball and would go back to work but fortunately for CEU he was contacted by one of the returning players from CEU who had seen him play in American Legion Thats when he decided to come to CEU Now at (XU Morgan is constantly proving his great ability to play baseball When asked to comment on Ids performance on the field he chose to comment more on his team “I feel I am playing well and I also feel that we have a terrific team this year But I feel we need support from the students and faculty
