Show &-- CEU Friday April 15 1983 ©POKHIOCJ Ignorance is not bliss but it's easy to get elected in it By Leif Nelson a CEU student Spring is here and with it come many activities among which is the annual election for student body officers Recent articles in the Eagle has exposed a few misunderstandings about student government which I feel are due to a lack of proper communication In an effort to improve understanding and increase awareness I have compiled some relatively unknown facts from the ASCEU Constitution that may be helpful to both students as well as candidates for office In order to be a member of the ASCEU (Associated Students of CEU) you must be registered for at least ten credit hours Members of the ASCEU have certain rights relative to student government Any member of the ASCEU may propose legislation by initiative petition which must contain the legislation proposed and the signatures of ten percent of the ASCEU registered at the end of the first week of the quarter in which the petition is filed If you don't like the job that an Executive Council member is doing a petition with the signatures of 25 percent of the ASCEU registered will force a recall election If you want to rednd any action taken by the Council a petition with the signatures of 15 percent of the students will put the issue to a vote for the students to decide if you want to form a dub on campus that will be officially recognized and have all the accompanying privileges see the ICC chairperson for details Not just any dub or organization will be recognized unless certain requirements are met If you want to run for office this spring you may want to know what will be expected of you from the beginning of your campaign all the way down to the time you are replaced by new officers the following year (provided you’re elected) (Some members of the executive council may also want to pay dose attention to what follows Chances are you will be surprised) wish to run must have a minimum CUMULATIVE GPA of 25 This must also be maintained throughout your tenure of office or you must immediately Those who design To be elected to your office you must obtain at least 60 election must be held (I hope percent of the vote or a run-osomeone remembers that this year) Student government has the responsibility “to insure that through open meetings forums etc appropriate provision is made for student opinions and ideas to be hear!" (Quote taken directly from the Constitution Do you fed 'heard'? ) Copies of die minutes of every Executive Council meeting must be posted in conspicuous places on campus (Ill try to wear my glasses more often if someone will tell me where conspicuous is) ff The president has lots and lots of responsibilities (as well as the rest of the Council Please note that I’m not listing all the responsibilities of each office but rather a few highlights of each) This person has the power to appoint an Ombudsman relations (Whoever This person is vital to the Council-Studethis person is I hope he or she is doing a good job) The president is responsible for drafting the student budget (a job none of us should covet) and appointing dass representatives in the Fall (with Council approval of course) The VP of Academics organizes and coordinates student polling (Results are printed periodically in this paper) The VP is chief parliamentarian (somebody look that up please) and supervises the student forums and assemblies as well as all the elections nt The VP of finance helps the president draft the annual budget (not a glamorous job is it?) This person should know where those student fees (remember that $60?) are going (At least we hope so If not let’s hope some more) The VP of Women's Affairs is responsible for the annual Preference Ball and is supposed to supervise the women’s intramurals as well as the Sadie Hawkins activities (It appears as though we can expect a lot of fun activities this quarter Let’s keep our fingers crossed) The VP of Men’s Affairs supervises men’s intramurals and is responsible for the Spring FormaL The ICC (INTER-CLU- B COUNCIL) Chairperson is for responsible coordinating all the activities of all the recognized dubs and organizations This committee comprised of the ICC Chairperson VP’s of Men’s and Women's Affairs and a representative from each organization is the group that will make or break the school as far as activities go (This job is especially difficult when one doesn’t know about or near from but a few dubs here on campus Tsk! Tskl) If a vacancy occurs in any office other than the president k there is to be a period in which any ASCEU member to considered be names submit for appointment to office may The Council itself has the power to remove any member from office There is of course a prescribed procedure for such an two-wee- occasion And one last quote from our ASCEU Constitution that may interest present and prospective Executive Council members: “No Executive Council member shall hold any leadership position on any approved dub or association on campus” I certainly hope this article has been enlightening to all I myself dislike being left in the dark about any subject which I feel is important Ignorance is not bliss Remember: No one can be saved in ignorance but it’s sure easy to get elected in it Survival in CELTs animal house By Richard Chavez of the Eagle staff Do you know what it’s like to sleep in and live in a jungle? If you’ve ever lived in the East Dorm or will in the future then you will or already know what it's like to be in a jungle And by chance have you heard that it’s going to be cod next year? Not that 1 want to paint a dim picture of what frill come but look out for an early 4th of July because there will be fireworks! Let me relate my past experiences with the East Dorm Have you ever heard of the famous watering? This is when you hear a knock on your door anxious to have a visitor you filled to the rim with open the door only to find a garbage can water pouring all over your feet and into your room Sometimes you’ll be sleeping (which doesn’t happen very often) and the next thing you know there is a celebration and mid-ai- r you’re the only guest bottle rockets exploding in on floor of water a the rush bravery right above your headT comes over you you explode out of bed charge the door only to find that you cannot get out you’ve just experienced being pennied in This is when all the play in the door is taken out by pennies being put between the door and its frame and the door cannot be opened It may sound fun to live in the jungle where no one sleeps at night but believe me it’s not Music blaring people yelling makes it very hard to be a college student Before moving into the East Dorm you have to put a $75 deposit down to insure that you don’t damage the premises only the lucky get half of that deposit back Don’t be surprised to find your door kicked open and some of your valuables missing The hard thing to believe is that people steal your clothes out of the washer and dryer The East Dorm is a jungle but with the right kind of supervision it can be a pleasant place to live Famous jazz musician sets concert date at CEU By Tedann Olsen of the Eagle staff Maynard Ferguson bandleader composer producer and jazz trumpet legend will be in concert Thursday May 19 at 7:30 pm in the Carbon High School Auditorium Ferguson’s concert is being sponsored by the Associated Students of the College of Eastern Utah Tickets are $6 and are available at the cashier’s window in the Main Building or from any member of the college choir Maynard Ferguson was bom in Quebec Canada He started playing musical instruments at the age of four when he began playing the piano and violin At the age of nine he was enrolled in the French Conservatory of Music By the time he was fifteen he was settled on the trumpet as his main instrument and started his own band The 40’s saw Maynard Ferguson coming through the ranks of the big band He played with such jazz greats as Charlie Barnet and Jimmy Dorsey In 1950 he joined Stan Kenton's band and became known as Maynard “Double High C” Ferguson ieft Kenton By 1956 he had and formed a band called The Birdland Dream Band and another band known as Jazz Farm where a young player named Chuck Mangione got his start The 60's brought the end of the big band era and a young Ferguson was forced to trim down his big band and give up his suits to go on the road In 1967 the Ferguson family moved to Manchester England where Ferguson started The Anglo American Jazz Band and toured extensively throughout Europe Ferguson also spent some time in the late 60’s in India Where he experimented spiritually and musically with Indian religion and music theory When he returned from India he signed a contract with CBS records and went to work on incorporating pop and rock compositions and dynamics into a fusion of the big band format This is the style Maynard “The Fox” Ferguson plays today (Continued on Page 4 ) |
