Show CEO Friday April U 198- -3 Changes in educational grant program The UJS Department of Education has asked Congress not to provide new funding for the State Student Incentive Grant Program (SSIG) the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program (SEOG) and the National Direct Student Loan Program (NDSL) They have asked Congress to increase funding for College Work-Stud- y (CWS) and Pell Grants Under the new budget they expect a higher loan volume and a higher loan average for the Guaranteed Student Loan Program (GSL) The Guaranteed Student Loan and Auxiliary Loan (PLUS) programs make low interest loans available to eligible graduate and undergraduate students (GSL) as well as parents (PLUS) by paying lenders interest while the student is in school and by subsidizing interest while the borrower is paying off the loan The combined program is the largest of the Federal financial aid programs In they are proposing some changes to the current law governing the GSL 1984 Under the proposed Self-hel- p (Pell) Grant Program students must meet a program Their 1984 budget proposes extending the “needs test” to all income levels Factors such as cost of tuition expected family contribution number of children in school etc will minimum continue to figure into the needs formula This proposed change is consistent with their belief that Federal aid should be reserved for those students who need the assistance $800 expected student contribution before being eligible for a grant The contribution would be a minimum of 40 percent of the cost of attendance — with an absolute dollar minimum of A student may meet his expected contribution from a variety of sources including the federal loan and work- - Computer dance is tonight By Connie Spanton of the Eagle staff Are your parents bugging you to death?
