captured from the Snake River breaks near Lewiston have survived in the face of a LEWISTON deadly disease By last Friday 63 had died of a pneumo- infection that probably nia-causing came from a feral for the first time — to drop a line in a spot that's deep enough to actually attract fish while staying out of boats’ way The fishing dock was the idea of A1 Burns Sr of Hyrum who talked his grandson Pete Burns into tackling the job Pete 14 and his buddy Ryan Burch 15 had decided to some old docks for their Eagle Scout projects But the ancient wood just crumbled under their paint brushes so they got ambitious and set about building a new dock using part of the old one for a base The result a redwood dock with railings (similar to the one at First Dam) projects out over water 16 feet deep near the northwest corner of the reservoir And although on a rainy afternoon this week the only anglers in sight preferred the boulders near the dam the dock should see plenty of use once the bells ring out the last day of school “We have a lot of kids who come down here and love to fish off the docks” said Lorie Morison a ranger at Hyrum State Park “Now they’ll feel more welcome and won’t have to compete with the boats” The only other dock at Hyrum is solely for coat loading and unloading and anyone fishing from the beach nt Photo by A Hart EvanaHaraM Journal Ryan Burch and Pete Bums helped construct a new fishing dock at Hyrum Reservoir The dock is designed to help youngsters and families get closer to the big ones lurking below nearby has to put up with noisy motors and big-tiwaves A1 credits Park Lee Gyllenskog with supportManager ing the plan and helping to see it through and Gyllenskog credits the pair of North Loan Scouts with creating “something they ican be proud of” “It fills a need here at the park because we’re getting too crowded near the boating slips to allow fishing there” Gyllenskog said “It gets kids off the dock so they aren't hooking boaters in the ear” And this was no easy project a total of 17 scouts parents state employees and community members put in 380 work hours on the dock cutting wood and bolting it together even burning out at least one drill in the process For Ryan “Coming out every day” to work was the biggest challenge — the boys started in late June and barely finished before October long enough for a pair of water snakes to make a home under- nealh the old dock in the field where they worked on it But observing the finished product which was moved to the reservoir and anchored about two weeks ago Ryan acknowledged with a smile that “I like it a lot” Indeed the dock is poised over what should be prime habitat for perch bass and the occasional rainbow trout undersaid The steep drop-of- f neath the dock is a bnishy rocky hillside and although most older anglers will probably prefer their special spots this promises to be a place where a kid can fill a limit without too much hassle Gyl-lensk- og And Pete hopes it will provide the younger set with a refuge from those noisy adults: “A lot of people are going to be able to fish now without boats getting in the way and scaring the fish off” See OUTDOORS REPORT onPhge 13 Scent and taste catapult anglers into top 10 percent zone By Drew Harthorn Scripps Howard News Service Scent and taste are fishing's last great secrets This philosophy has helped many zone anglers rocket to the I’m sure many of you have heard before that 10 percent of the anglers catch 90 percent of the fish There are many rea- sons for this and understanding the theory behind scent can help your success In the 1600s the King of England first who appointed a royal scent-makbrewed up secret ingredients to assure the king caught more fish than his rivals The medicine men of the jungle had to catch fish when no one else was catching fish to ensure the tribe's survival Fish are creatures from a different world In the underwater world vision is er Research revealed three key aspects to understanding fish: food sex and fear limited and sound is chaotic Smell is the only secure uncomipted means of communication To put this into perspective a dog’s sense of smell is 1000 times more sensitive that a human A fish's sense of smell is 1000 times mote sensitive than a dog That my friend makes a fish's sense of smell 1 million times more sensitive than a human A leading pioneer in the fish scent business is Greg Bambcnck MD aka Dr Juice Bambenek has traveled to India China Nepal and the Central American rain forests studying with the tribal herbalists medicine men and fish- ermen trying to learn their secrets to hunting and fishing with scents Dr Juice has also worked with a Uni- versity of Minnesota Sea Grant The research revealed three key aspects to understanding fish: food sex and fear How all of this ties into fishing scents is simple: you're always fishing with some type of scent whether you realize it or not Some scents are good and many are bad Some of the scents fishing guides and charter boat skippers despise are gas oil citrus fruit (oranges lemons etc) suntan lotion insect repellent and most of all human scent These odors repel fish JR Brett and D MacKinnon in their landmark 1953 Stamp River Falls study proved that human scent is a potent repeller of fish They tested 54 substances at the fish ladder to determine what halted fish from upstream migration The scents that proved to be the worst offenders were from human skin bear paw deer foot and sea lion meat In 1956 Idler Fagerlin and Helen Mayo isolated and identified the active chemical as the amino acid serine Humans have different levels of serine in their body Every time you touch a lure tail or associated tackle you leave a fingerprint laced with serine Fish detect that If your serine level is high you are detracting fish The best way to cure this is by using a lure and hand cleaner Berkley and Dr Juice both market cleaners In the old days it was traditional to nib hening all over your hands prior to salmon fishing There’s action way down upon the Suwannee River By Terry Tomalin St Petersburg Times LIVE OAK Fla — The Sherman boys wanted action “You know whitewater” Ifcte said “Rapids Faaaaaaast water" The Suwannee River has its share of rocks and shoals espe- cially when the water is low But it’s nothing like the wild rivers these boys from New York had seen in might even think it was a trip like this that inspired Stephen Foster to write Florida’s state song 150 years or so ago “Way down upon the Swanec River Far far away There’s where the old folks stay" Fat chance The truth is Foster never saw let alone paddled this stretch of water In fact the composer just wanted the name of a river with two syllables He looked at a map of Florida saw “Suwannee”
