Richman Two plays opened two theatre seasons in Salt Lake last weekend Bob Randall's 6 RMS KIV VU" at Theatre 138 and Eugene Ionesco's "Victims of Duty" for the Utah Shakespeare Players at Westminster College. Thursday night's offering at 138 was well attended and well received by a young, but theatrically undernourished, audience. Although they were fed corn flakes, they ate it up with thanksgiving. Too bad they couldn't have digested some of the good dramatic nutrients dished up by the Utah Shakespeare Players, whose Friday night performance was witnessed by about a dozen folk with finicky appetites. "6 RMS RIV VU" suffered in comparison with last year's television productions starring Carol Burnett and Alan Alda which this reviewer, as luck would have it, saw. Tlie play is a comedy about a couple who meet in a vacant apartment in New York City, get locked in accidentally, and have what else?-F-- a '"brief encounter." One' bf the plays' biggest problems is that "I-aTango in Paris" had already used that same situation to confront some harsh realities about the sexual relationship. "6 RMS RIV VE, in comparison, seems a prudish evasion of the issue. What is lacking in the 138 production is a certain robustness--i- n the play itself, in the direction, in the performances. No way could I believe that those two people were attracted to each other. There was no electricity. Ariel Ballif's set had it, though, with lighting fixtures that really worked, a window that really opened in a New York tenement stripped to the essentials, the perfect setting for a play to come along in and lay bare some essentials of the human condition. But a good set does not a play make. A good play on the other hand, can make a set. The Utah Shakespeare Players had a minimal set and no Victims of lights for Duty." It was explained that something had gone wrong with the lighting equipment and the play was performed under house lights. Great lines delivered with the right force transformed the few props and pieces of furniture into a living room, a cellar, mud. a stage, a pink village, and Anally Mont Blanc itself. One saw and felt all of that without set or lights. (Felt? A pink village? Yes.) All of this was possible because the language was so Ane and the performances were so Ane. Especially fine was Craig Cook as Choubert. the hero, who plumbs the depths of depression and his subconscious and scales the heights of euphoria in his search for an answer to the riddle: Does Mallot spell his name with a D" or a T"? The riddle represents the cen- tral problem plays have traditionally concerned themselves with solving, and Ionesco with a little help from the Shakespeare Players and Director Kenn Klein proves that the riddle itself is nothing; What really matters is the good old quest--t- he plumbing of the depths and the scaling of the heights--th- e shared experience that is theatre. "6 RMS RIV VI"' continues Thursday through Saturdays through November 16. Victims of Duty can be seen next Thursday and Friday, November 1 and 2.
