The Miners defensive line was particularly hard hit by graduation. Head coach Wayne Carlson has had to replace last year's hefty crew with smaller players who are in need of game experience. Carlson says his new group has the ability but is prone to making mistakes. His defense includes many sophomores who will . receive considerable playing time. Assistant coach Ron Stepen, Mark Evans . who concentrates on defense, has linebackers, comerbacks, and safeties who are game tested and the Miner secondary is expected ' to perform well. Depth Although he hasnt got the solid starting teams he had last year, Coach Carlson feels he has more depth for the coming campaign. Park City will suit up 32 players this season as opposed to the 22 who took the field in 73. Outstanding Players The players who are being counted on heavily this season include Willie Murnin, Jim King, Pat Pirraglio, Jack Mawhinney, Tony Uriarte, Mark Evans, Rick Provost, Rory Andrus, Gilbert Martinez, and Doug Ford. Murnin was an All Region Nine selection last year. The 165 lb. senior is the power runner of the team at fullback and days middle linebacker on defense. Senior King will complement Murnin at halfback and will man the cornerback slot when the opposition has the ball. Quarterback Pat Pirraglio is described by Carlson as being real quick. He throws the ball well and runs well. Third year varsity man Jack Mawhinney is characterized as being the workhorse of the Miner squad. He plays offensive guard and defensive end while occasionally Riling in at offensive halfback. Offensive end and defensive cornerback Tony Uriarte was too small to play last year, but he has been coming on strong in prac- tices. On opposite ends and comers from Uriarte is Mark Evans. Although a senior, this is Evans first year of football, and Coach Carlson says he improves with He will be one of the good of Carlson ones, says sophomore safety Rick Provost, he makes few mistakes. Two players who are expected to excel are coming off the list of last years injured.
